Silicon Motion,  released a new revision of its controller SM2246EN, another developer, JMicron company , prepared an update of its  controller JMF667H.  However, to avoid confusion, update revision received a new model number - JMF670H.  The main difference - all the same: introduced support for a new flash memory made at rates 16-nm process technology, production of which has recently mastered Micron . JMF667H opportunities were limited by the fact that this controller only supports four-channel configuration with eight times alternating on each of the channels, while not exploited crystals NAND process technology made no thinner than 20 nm (IMFT) and 19 nm (Toshiba / SanDisk / Samsung) weighing not more than 64 Gbps.  Thus, the maximum possible amount of storage does not exceed 256 GB.   JMF670H, which will start mass production in the next few weeks,  a four-channel, but is now able to address up to 512 GB of memory, and not only the 16-nm MLC NAND  Micron production, also introduced support for 3D NAND.  However,  Samsung has mastered and commercialization of this memory type  , it is clearly not widespread, so the cost of drives have not targeted JMicron products.  But in the near future we should expect the spread of TLC NAND Toshiba, made at rates 15-nm process, but this memory JMF670H do not support.   And, unlike JMF667H, new JMF670H expects fairly short life cycle: in the fourth quarter of this year, it will be replaced by JMF810 and JMF811.  The number of memory channels increased to eight, but impose a limit on the storage capacity will remain the same - no more than 512 GB.  Also, finally, will support TLC NAND. JMF810 is universal and used across the spectrum of form factors SSDs on the market today: mSATA, SATA, M.2, PCI-Express 2.0.  However, the last two interfaces are limited to only two lines of PCI-E - like, for example, Marvell 88SS9183.   JMicron again takes the position of  catch-up.  The company has introduced one of the last in their support SATA3 NAND-controllers.  Now the promised release of new controllers, analogues of which already exist in quite workable industrial designs.  For example, Marvell 88SS9183  will make them quite well competition , which is present on the market for about six months, it support brand new 88SS1083, and for the budget TLC NAND drives have already prepared Marvell 88SS1074.  However, do not forget about the significant differences: Marvell provides customers only controllers and documentation, while JMicron offer not only controllers   , but the firmware to them, and ready board design.   Related Products :
