Android L got its own project name Volta. Name of the project is easy to associate with the name of the famous physicist Alessandro Volta, who made a great contribution to the study of electricity, and it's not just done so: in Android L developers have tried to optimize the energy consumption and significantly increase the devices battery life .
In particular, scheduler API JobScheduler, which is able to group the low priority requests by applications, such as cleaning or the synchronization database specific data. At the request of developers such groups can wait queue for execution until the most opportune moment, until the machine is connected to the charger. In addition, the operating system will not wake the processor to perform networking tasks in the absence of connection. Dalvik virtual machine has given way to a more perfect ART. The latter is not only faster, but also compiles applications once and not every time before starting. All this reduces the load on the CPU and, therefore, increases battery life.
Work of Project Volta journalists decided to check using the Nexus 5. Observers held a scientific approach: Testing was performed on the same device, which in turn was on the operating system Android version 4.4 and L, in both cases use the same set of applications, and the screen brightness was set at 200 nits. During the test every 15 seconds smartphone updated webpage over Wi-Fi to complete discharge, additional energy saving algorithms have been disabled. To obtain more reliable results, the test was conducted twice.
With Android L smartphone lived 36% longer, which can be considered more than a decent result. Finally, Android L used the trial version in the final edition so some additional improvements are also possible. Related Products :
