Project Shield Initiative was launched by Google a few years ago. It is focused on the protection of small sites from DDoS-attacks. In particular, this concerned the independent news portals, blogs and so on.
Previously, this system was tested in beta, and access to it were only about a hundred resources. Now the system is up and running with all sites. Using Project Shield is free, but the procedure involves approval By Google. In technical terms, we are talking about passing all network traffic to a particular site using a reverse proxy server that will filter out malicious data. Also, some elements will be cached. However, the bulk of the technical information shall not be disclosed, to prevent the possibility of producing random attacks on resources
As noted, the priority will be given to trusted sites that regularly appear in the news aggregator Google News. In general, access to Project Shield can get the resources that do not have sufficient funds to ensure its own security network. At the same time, as stated by the head of the group George Conard, access to large corporate portals will also be available, but keep in mind that Project Shield filter capabilities are not limitless, and are designed for relatively small sites.
