Organization of the US Department of Defense in the field of advanced search projects The Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) launched a project to create a processor on non-Neumanian architecture. All modern CPUs and GPUs have been based on the architecture based on John von Neumann's theory since the forties of the last century. For tasks related to the processing of Big Data (unstructured information), this architecture does not work effectively. A new DARPA project with an
initial cost of $ 80 million is designed to create a processor that would be 1000 times more energy efficient (or faster) than the processors on the classical architecture. This decision is not only for the military, but will also find application on the "citizen". Developers will be allowed to use the invention for commercial purposes.
The project HIVE (Hierarchical Identify Verify Exploit) is designed for four and a half years. In the first year, proposals from Intel and Qualcomm will be studied, after which work will begin directly on the processor. Development will be the first processor in the history to process graphs (the graph is represented as a set of vertices (nodes) connected by edges). This will be a graph analytic processor (GAP). The processor will work with sequences represented in the form of multi-layered
graphical structures, which will help quickly find the links between the data in layers and between layers. For example, you can track and predict the buying activity of Amazon site visitors or search for a source of cyber attacks.
In addition to the processor itself, a new memory structure must be developed. A modern view of the memory hierarchy with the use of long sequences for the cache is not suitable for solving the DARPA tasks. Data retrieval by the GAP processor should work extremely quickly without a cache in the global memory with random blocks. The GAP architecture should allow the processor to work with both random isolated areas in memory, and allow simultaneous placement and retrieval of data in any parts
of global memory. As you can see, there is a lot of work to be done. But the winner will have access to the trough with military orders. Related Products :
