POSTER: computer news   ||   THE MOST RELIABLE HDD VERSION BACKBLAZE

DATE:2016-05-20

Backblaze company  talks about what HDD models have worked the past year, in good faith, and which - out of order.

  • November 13, 2013: About 50% of hard drive capable of operating for at least six years ;
  • December 6, 2013: Enterprise-class HDD demonstrate comparable reliability to the consumer ;
  • January 22, 2014: Statistics reliability of hard drives as an example of data processing center ;
  • May 13, 2014: Temperature has no significant effect on the service life of hard drive ;
  • September 26, 2014: Backblaze has renewed statistical data on the HDD reliability .
  • January 23, 2015: In search of a reliable HDD 2014. Statistics Backblaze .

And now it is time to analyze the next report, since he was published on the company's website.

To date, the company Backblaze in its data center uses 61590 HDD.  This is 9.5% more hard drives than at the time of last year's report.  The total amount of operating time in the 1st quarter of 2016 amounted to more than a billion hours, or 42 million Days or 114,155 years of storage.

HDD reliability in the first quarter 2016.

The list includes 61523 hard drive, and not 61590 as mentioned above. The reason for this is that the model is not taken into account, which are represented in less than 45 copies;

Some models have a zero percent. This means that there was no data on the patterns of failure during the 1st quarter of 2016;

When analyzing the failure rates should take into account the number of samples. For example, the failure rate of 8.65% HDD Toshiba 3TB based on just one failed instance;

The total failure rate was 1.84% - the lowest quarterly figure in the company's history.

Aggregate indicators of hard drives reliability

Statistical data collection staff Backblaze for publishing reports began about three years ago.  The following table is cumulative as of March 31, 2016 for each year starting from April 10, 2013.

One billion hours of operation

One billion hours is the sum of the duration of all drives.  For example, it includes WDC drives to 1TB, which were be completely removed after the operation from an average of 6 years of operation.

In the line Other is taken into account the work of those models that are not listed separately, because they were in operation less than 45 copies.

In the above table, HDD Seagate 4TB leader in terms of hours of operation:

Early models HGST drives, especially the 2 TB and 3 TB, worked for a long time and provide excellent service during the past few years.  This "time-to-work" at this point outweighs HDD Seagate 4TB volume indicators, introduced in operation in the past year.

The relationship between the HDD models on the number of hours worked in a different graphic representation - now in terms of volume:

Models volume of 4TB total logged more than 580 million Hours.  We are talking about 48 041 copies, which means an average of 503 days (1.38 years) of operation.  Failure rate models up to 4TB 2.12%.

HDD.  Reliability by producers

Backblaze uses HDD from four  manufacturers, while dominated by HGST and Seagate.  The following chart shows the data on damage, broken by years and manufacturers.

Why do companies generally have a model number of 45 copies?

There are several reasons:

  • Initially, it was more than 45 pieces, but some drives out of service and replaced them on other models HDD;
  • They got to the Backblaze in the program Drive Farming few years ago in an amount of only a few instances of the same model. Backblaze loves standardize equipment and prefers to work with large batches;
  • they were collected from hard drives of equal volume but different models and manufacturers.

If these drives less than 45 pieces, in the statistics, they do not fall, only general information is available on them.

Why not Toshiba and Western Digital?

The company is often asked why  did not buy more drives Toshiba and Western Digital.  The short answer - "we are tired."  The fact is that now the company needs large batches of disks, 5,000-10,000 copies.  As for Toshiba, then Backblaze does not believe drives the company possessing the best quality / price ratio.  With regard to Western Digital, the Backblaze regularly receive interesting proposals, but every time there are various accidents, which resulted in the deal break down.  Therefore, continuing the purchase of Seagate and HGST solutions.

What is a "defective HDD» in the understanding of the company?

Backblaze consider three reasons as defective HDD:

  • HDD will not spin up or connect to the operating system;
  • HDD is not synchronized or permanently drops out of the RAID-array;
  • SMART parameters beyond thresholds.

POSTER: computer news   ||   GOOGLE CREATED OF SPECIAL PROCESSOR FOR AI

DATE:2016-05-20

At Google IO conference, the company made a small splash.  The company admitted that over the years developed a special processor for artificial intelligence.  Furthermore, processors called Tensor Processing Units (TPU) for over a year serving on the company's data centers.

According to Google, the processor (or accelerator) Tensor Processing Units is three generations ahead of competitors like development.  It is designed to speed up the tasks associated with deep machine learning and much more effective than the use of general purpose processors or accelerators based on FPGA-matrices.  The company did not share the specifications of new items, and hinted that the TPU processors do not go beyond the limits of computing Google halls.

It should be noted that the TPU module is quite original.  It has dimensions similar to the dimensions of a typical hard disk and installed in the same interface connector as HDD-drive.  In fact, Google uses to create the AI counters conventional baskets for hard drives.  It seems that this has helped the company to keep secret development.  By the way, the source code TensorFlow system to promote learning machine company made ??public in the last year .  A processor for optimum performance code revealed only now.

POSTER: computer news   ||    SONY INTRODUCES A NEW TYPE OF INFORMATION DISPLAYS

DATE:2016-05-20

Sony has introduced a new display technology on conventional rather than organic light emitting diode.  The technology called Crystal LED Integrated Structure or CLEDIS.  The essence of the design is that each pixel on the display represented by the triad of LEDs ultralow surface mounted.  This allows 99% of the surface of the display always remain black, and not affect the color quality, screen reporting the highest level of contrast as the day in bright ambient light, and at night.

The area of each RGB LED triads equal to 0,003 square meters.  mm.  Each of the three RGB-LED pixel operates independently from the others.  Surface Mount LEDs leads to the maximum luminous efficiency of radiation, promising a review of 180 degrees at any angle to the screen.  Maximum screen brightness is then equal to 1000 cd / m² (1000 nits).  Stated color gamut is 140% sRGB color scheme.  The display supports 10-bit color coding and extended dynamic range (HDR).

It is important that the company has created a modular design of the display, which allow to produce frameless screens arbitrary diagonal.  Each module carries RGB triad-in configuration of 320 x 320 pieces.  The claimed contrast ratio of greater than 1000000: 1.  The speed of playback frame is at 120 frames per second.

Total side by side can work 20 control modules, each of which is able to control 72 display modules (in the picture above one control unit with 72 display modules).  Each controller is thus able to provide a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels.  The control module has dimensions of 440 x 349 x 65 mm and carries DisplayPort ports (2 pcs.) And DVI-D (4 pieces).

All this beauty is designed for commercial use such as shops, stadiums, museums, parks, meetings rooms of large corporations.  On sale the novelty will appear in early 2017.  Public demonstration of the development is scheduled for June 8-10 at InfoComm 2016 in Las Vegas.  There, Sony will display a resolution of 8K x 2K.
