POSTER: computer news   ||   NVIDIA COMPUTING ARCHITECTURE PASCAL ACCELERATORS WILL HAVE 16 GB OF MEMORY TYPE HBM

DATE:2016-04-01

NVIDIA presentation  was dedicated to accelerators NVIDIA Tesla computing.  Let's start with the fact that the first generation of accelerators computing Volta appear at the end of 2017,  NVIDIA will start implementing them in two supercomputer systems (Summit and Sierra).

In the consumer market graphical solutions generation Volta unlikely to appear before 2018.

Pascal architecture can host up to 16 GB of memory type HBM - we are talking about the second generation memory, but there is no way to predict what will be the maximum amount of memory in consumer graphics solutions in this family .

In a further development of its GPU NVIDIA company will pay special attention to improving the speed of interaction of multiple graphics processors to each other, as well as the implementation of the principles of unification of the memory address space.

Substantial assistance in speeding up the transfer of information will be NVLink interface that allows graphics processors to communicate with each other at speeds of up to 20 GB / s in one direction.  A pair of GPUs will be able to communicate in four lines NVLink, with an aggregate bandwidth of 80 GB / s.

In speedup oriented systems  , this optimization will make a huge difference.

DATE:2016-04-01

The first software developers in the field of augmented reality has already had the opportunity to come into contact with the device Microsoft HoloLens.  Since this helmet is made of augmented reality in the United States in small batches, then wanting to get it from the developers not only have to pay $ 3000 per copy, but stand in the virtual queue.

The first batch of the devices boxed packaging which Microsoft demonstrated to the public in social networks, is already sold out .  The company promises that the second wave of applications will be able to meet in the next two or three months.  The package, in addition to the device itself HoloLens, includes a protective carrying case and storage, as well as the remote control that simplifies the work with the interface.

POSTER: computer news   ||    XEON PROCESSORS ARE MOVING TO 14 NM MEET BROADWELL-EP

DATE:2016-04-01

The transition to the production of 14-nm processors, Intel was given a hard time.  Thus, the release of processors Xeon EP - E5-2600 v4 series for dual-processor configurations - delayed many time , .  Yesterday the news were finally announced.  The company presented under three dozen models  the serie.  Xeon EP processors of the previous generation E5-2600 series were based on 22-nm process technology and the company's Haswell-EP core.  The transition to 14-nm process technology has allowed to increase the number of cores on a chip without changing the solutions area, and without increasing the maximum consumption.

Thus, the maximum number of cores in the new generation Xeon E5-2600 series processors has increased from 18 to 22, and the maximum amount of cache in the third level from 45 MB to 55 MB.  Besides the built-in CPU memory controller supporting increased effective frequency DDR4 SDRAM with 2133 MHz for the Haswell-EP to 2400 MHz for the Broadwell-EP.  As with previous decisions, the processors Xeon Broadwell-EP installed in processor socket LGA 2011v3 (Socket R3) in the motherboard with Intel C610 chipset.

According to Intel, the processors Xeon Broadwell-EP will be justified choice for the new generation of cloud-based systems.  The processor architecture introduced some innovations that optimize the work platform under the load of virtual machines.  For example, the function Cache Monitoring and Allocation Technologies (CMT, CAT) allows you to manually and automatically control the CPU cache.  This will give an opportunity to share important CPU resources on the priorities for remote users, as well as to ensure optimum performance of the platform in a software-configurable infrastructure.

The question price starts at $ 212 and ends at around $ 4115.  Among the models can also detect a single processor for two-socket workstations - 12-core model E5-2687W v4.  The value of the maximum consumption of the model for this category of products  is 160 watts.  Price - $ 2141.  But the operating frequency reaches quite good value 3 GHz.

POSTER: computer news   ||   LACK OF ROAD MARKING MAKES LIFE HARDER FOR ROBOCAR

DATE:2016-04-01

Recently, representatives of Google corporation , which has been developing automated driving systems, reported about the desire to reduce dependence of robocar on wireless interfaces, which can transmit the necessary information  for decision-making.

However, as explained Reuters resources available autopilot system for cars are heavily dependent not only on accurate digital maps, but also on the availability of road markings, traffic signs and the correct placement of traffic lights.  For example,  Volvo specialists were unpleasantly surprised by the condition of road markings on some American roads, which is why the Swedish prototype car with automatic pilot was not able to move independently .  Incidentally, in the US, about 65% of the roads are in poor condition, so robocar will have to rely on multiple channels to obtain the necessary navigation information along the roads.  Interestingly, the German engineers have learned sedan Mercedes-Benz E-Class held in his band in the absence of road markings - Automation focuses on road barriers and trajectory neighbors downstream.  23 sensor system is able to keep the car in its lane at speeds up to 135 km / h.

Excessive number of sensors, allowing with some confidence to guarantee adequate "orientation of the vehicle on the ground," significantly increases the value of the vehicle - according to some estimates,  $ 4,000 only in terms of cost.  Car manufacturers will have to spend in the next decade at least $ 1 billion. For the development of the autopilot functions, and these costs will be gradually passed on to customers budget.  Even accurate digital maps will force automakers to pay $ 50-60 for each machine, with the most conservative estimates, not covering the actual cost of map compilers.

Fortunately, the sensors become cheaper and more compact.  If the first generation of optical sensors ( "LIDAR"), which uses Google's company on their prototypes, worth under $ 75,000 for the system, now under development device for $ 250, and by 2018 the cost will drop to $ 100.  In the US, by the way, navigation robocar complicated by the fact that different states can use their tradition road marking and traffic lights.
