POSTER: computer news   ||   AMD XCONNECT AN EXTERNAL GRAPHICS CARD TO YOUR NOTEBOOK - NOW OFFICIALLY

DATE:2016-03-11

Razer company  back in early January, has demonstrated not only the case for discrete graphics cards connect to the laptop through the interface Thunderbolt 3 , but also compatible laptop with connector type USB-C. NVIDIA Corporation has introduced support for such solutions in the driver back in January, without much noise  AMD introduced a similar technology XConnect only this week. One of the main partners in the promotion of this standard was precisely Razer company.

System requirements for working with AMD XConnect quite simple:

  • Drivers Radeon Software 16.2.2 or newer;
  • One Thunderbolt port 3;
  • Thunderbolt cable 3, which supports transfer rates of 40 Gbit / s;
  • Operating System Windows 10 build 10586 or newer;
  • Support for external video card with interface Thunderbolt 3 BIOS-level notebook;
  • Certified housing for external video card with interface Thunderbolt and 3 compatible video card;
  • Firmware Thunderbolt (NVM) v.16.

While only supports the following video cards:

  • Series Radeon R9 Fury;
  • Radeon R9 Nano;
  • Series Radeon R9 3xx;
  • Radeon R9 290X;
  • Radeon R9 290;
  • Radeon R9 285.

In the future, the list of compatible video cards will expand, not only due to the Polaris architecture. Notebook is not required to connect an external video card to reboot, which is very convenient. However, in this case, the discrete-class graphics card has to rely on mobile computing power of the CPU, but this tandem is still more productive than any regular mobile notebook graphics card. Razer Core case can accommodate card with bunk cooling system, built-in power supply capacity is sufficient for 375 W power consumption. It also allows to charge the laptop battery via the Thunderbolt cable.
