POSTER: computer news   ||    SECURITY UPDATE OS X DISABLES THE ETHERNET-PORT

DATE:2016-02-29

Apple company has unhealthy tradition of first releasing the update, and then quickly fix it because of problems.  This time the problem arose with the Ethernet-connection.  031-51913 update that fixes some security issues, at the same time to fix a wired internet connection, in fact, disabling the Ethernet-ports in the iMac, and the MacBook Pro.

The company has already officially recognized the problem and on the support website posted a document describing what to do.  In the case of the availability of Wi-Fi still is relatively simple - Incompatible Kernel Extension Configuration Data, which causes the problem, it will be updated to version 3.28.2 (the problem occurs on 3.28.1).  If this can not be done or for some reason, the system does not download the update itself, the terminal is recommended to update the system manually.

After rebooting, the problem will disappear.

SECURITY UPDATE OS X DISABLES THE ETHERNET-PORT

POSTER: computer news   ||    DDR4 MEMORY ALREADY CHEAPER DDR3

DATE:2016-02-29

DDR4 Memory Type made its debut in August 2014, in this period  was approximately 30% more expensive DDR3 memory with the same frequency.  A little more than a year was required to ensure that variation in prices leveled off, and now, according to 3DCenter site, DDR4 modules are cheaper.  This is especially noticeable for modules with very high efficiency rate.  price ratio shown in the table below:

Module 4 GB Module 8 GB
DDR3 DDR4 DDR3 DDR4
14-20 € - DDRx / 1600 29-35 € -
18-25 € - DDRx / 1866 32-40 € -
20-30 € 16-25 € DDRx / 2133 37-50 € 30-40 €
20-30 € 18-25 € DDRx / 2400 36-50 € 32-40 €
32-50 € 22-30 € DDRx / 2666 70-100 € 41-50 €
44-70 € 22-30 € DDRx / 2800 125-160 € 45-60 €
75-110 € - DDRx / 2933 270-320 € -
65-80 € 25-35 € DDRx / 3000 - 45-60 €

Soon DDR4 memory will become the main standard for personal computers.  This means that DDR3 module production volume will be reduced and they will be purchased mainly for upgrading older computers.  Thus,  DDR3 memory in the foreseeable future could be even more expensive, while the DDR4 will continue to become cheaper against the background of growing production volumes and introduction of new technologies.

POSTER: computer news    ||    ALPHACOOL RELEASED QUICK RELEASE COUPLINGS EISZAPFEN

DATE:2016-02-29

Alphacool offers a solution in the form of quick connectors Eiszapfen.  The couplings are threaded G1 / 4, which allows their use in conjunction with any standard fittings used in liquid cooling systems.  The locking mechanism with two seals eliminates droplet splashing and leakage of coolant, and the special design allows not to interfere with normal flow of fluid.

Eiszapfen couplings made of brass and are available in versions in silver and black.  The price of one connector is $ 23.10 in  Alphacool online store.

POSTER: computer news   ||    GOOGLE TOLD ABOUT HIS EXPERIENCE OF USING SSD-DRIVES IN THE DATA CENTER

DATE:2016-02-29

Large companies began to actively use SSDs in their data centers, which is why there is not much information about how these drives behave for a given usage scenario.

Google is using SSD in their data centers, and at FAST 2016 conference, they presented a report (p. 67-80) on the reliability of various solid-state drives in continuous operation as a part of the data center.  The report presents data on the SSD-drives from 10 different models of corporate and consumer classes that use three types of memory (MLC, eMLC and SLC), and a combined total of more than 1 million days during 6 years.

The study yielded some very surprising results.  So, it turned out that the reliability of solid-state drives affects their age, rather than the intensity of use.  More emerged  drives high-end SLC memory is more reliable than disk drives with MLC memory.  Failures SSD-drives are less common than hard drives, but SSD higher rate of occurrence of uncorrectable errors.  Therefore, the researchers in the case of SSD recommend more frequent  files backup.

An important discovery was that described in the documentation SSD coefficient uncorrectable bit error rate (UBER - Uncorrectable Bit Error Rate) has no practical significance and does not affect the operation of the drive in the future.  Bit Error Ratio (RBER - Raw Bit Error Rate) does not increase as fast as we can expect, and does not depend on UBER or other failures.

Failed (bad or bad) blocks are characteristic of many of the new SSD-drives.  In 30-80% of solid-state drives appear in at least one bad block in the first four years of use.
