POSTER: computer news   ||    AMD RECOGNIZES THAT THE GROWTH IN THE FREQUENCY POTENTIAL OF PROCESSORS HAS SLOWED DOWN

DATE:2017-05-18

AMD technical director Mark Papermaster at the last event tried to explain how the company is going to live in conditions of modification of the so-called "Moore's law".  According to this empirical rule, formulated by one of the founders of Intel more than forty years ago, the semiconductor industry developed until recently, but now there was a need not so much to revise the formulation as to seek new ways of developing microprocessor technology.

Each new generation of processors, produced by more "thin" lithographic standards, does not give the previous increase in frequency.  This fact is recognized in AMD openly, because this is not an Intel company, for which keeping the "Moore's Law" is a matter of honor.

How to improve the speed of computing in the new environment, AMD explains on the second slide.  New interfaces, layout solutions, the use of automation in the design of microchips - that's what can be done on the part of "hardware".  In addition, you can apply new types of memory and accelerators of computing based on graphics processors.  Need to optimize and software.

"Transistor budget" AMD spends 10% more efficient than its main competitor, if we compare the latest 14-nm processors with four cores.

When AMD CEO Lisa Su began to talk about the company's achievements from a historical perspective, success in uncovering the frequency potential of the central and graphics processors got into an improvised "glory gallery."  So, the head of AMD reminded that it was this company that first released the central processor with a frequency of 1 GHz, and later offered a graphics processor with the same frequency.  To other achievements, AMD includes the world's first 64-bit x86-compatible processor, the world's first hybrid processor with integrated graphics, and the conquest of the turnaround in one teraflops.

POSTER: computer news   ||    BLACKBERRY DEVELOPS ANTIVIRUS FOR SMART CARS

DATE:2017-05-18

Cars are becoming more like personal computers. Software updates allow not only to activate new functions, but also to determine the power reserve of electric vehicles, as it happens with the younger Tesla Model S complete sets, in which the capacity of the traction battery is limited by software.

As noted by Reuters with reference to the comments of analysts Macquarie, the Canadian company BlackBerry develops anti-virus software for cars, which could in the background find potential vulnerabilities and request updates to resolve them through wireless networks.  In case of a critical vulnerability, the owner of the car could receive notices requiring that you refrain from traveling for safety until the software is updated.

According to the source, a couple of automakers are already testing this software - Aston Martin and Range Rover are mentioned in the news, but the first one did not confirm the relevant tests, and the second one was not available for comment at the time of preparation of the material by Reuters employees.  According to analysts, BlackBerry could receive a subscription fee for anti-virus software - at $ 10 per month from each car.  The year before last, the discovery of a vulnerability in Fiat Chrysler's vehicle management systems forced the corporation to recall 1.4 million machines for software updates.  As sources of increased danger, modern vehicles require special attention from information security professionals and management systems.

POSTER: computer news   ||    BMW BELIEVES THAT THE NUMBER OF GLOBAL AUTOPILOT PLATFORMS WILL BE LIMITED

DATE:2017-05-17

Each major supplier of automotive components led its own development in the field of automating the driving process   - even before the industry giants began to announce the creation of alliances.  For example, Delphi cooperated with Audi / Volkswagen and NVIDIA, but it did not prevent it from conducting joint development with Intel and Mobileye.  Actually, as reported by Reuters , this week Delphi announced the entry into an alliance with BMW, Intel and Mobileye, which will create a platform for the "roboboyles" of the German brand.  By the way, competing concern Daimler some time secured the support of Bosch, so this kind of behavior is not new.

BMW generally believes that the high cost of development, high technology and high rates of  new technologies introduction  will force market participants to create alliances in the future, and therefore the number of global platforms on which "robobiles" of different brands will be built will be limited.  BMW created in alliance with Intel and Delphi platform will not only use for their "robots" that will be out by 2021, but also plans to license these developments to third-party customers.  By the way, this strategy is ready to adhere to Baidu and Volvo - with the only difference being that the latter is ready to make money on sales of software for robocar.

Delphi in the BMW project will participate in the already existing developments that were obtained at the stage of cooperation with Intel and Mobileye.  The latter, in fact, will soon become one company, so the nominal number of members of the alliance will be reduced.  BMW and Intel are also shareholders of HERE - one of the largest cartographic services inherited from Nokia.  Delphi is ready not only to provide components and algorithms, but also to deal with their system integration.
