POSTER: c   ||    PRESENTED AMD RADEON VEGA FRONTIER EDITION SZHO AND RADEON PRO VEGA SSG

DATE:2017-05-17

In addition to the fan cooled version of the AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition, the company introduced a version of the adapter with a liquid cooling system (the official name is the same) and a version with SSD drives on board (model Radeon Pro Vega SSG).  Adapter AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition with a liquid cooling system has the same design as its fellow with a fan.  The color of the casing and the color of the logo are different in the corner of the video card.

With the advent of the AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition with liquid cooling, the developer becomes the solution provider of the entire spectrum.  In addition to models with active air and liquid cooling, we recall that AMD prepared a model Radeon Instinct MI25 with passive air cooling for shelving computers with placement in server racks.  The specifications of all three solutions, based on the same thermal package (300 W) and peak performance (13 teraflops for FP32), are identical.  Consequently, this is 4096 stream processors at a frequency just above 1550 MHz and 16 GB of HBM2 memory with a bandwidth of 480 GB / s.

By the way, about why AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition is compared with NVIDIA TITAN Xp.  As with the competitor, AMD adapter is deprived of a significant part of blocks for processing double-precision operations (FP64).  Both of them are aimed at the same tasks: deep machine learning and visualization, including the creation of VR-content.  In operations with half-precision,  AMD novelty shows up to 25 teraflops, and NVIDIA TITAN Xp shows around 20 teraflops in the region.  For FP 32, the difference is less and equal, respectively, 12.5 teraflops and 12 teraflops.  True, the peak consumption of the AMD novelty reaches 300 W, while the peak consumption of NVIDIA TITAN Xp is up to 250 W.  So, if there is not a parity, then there is some advantage of developing NVIDIA.

Also, AMD presented a version of the video card with a built-in SSD-adapter on the adapter card.  More precisely, reported the presence of such without a picture and without disclosing the specifications.  Earlier, recall, based on the Fiji GPU, the AMD Radeon Pro SSG adapter was presented for $ 10,000. The solution was a video card with two M.2 slots, each of which was equipped with 512 GB SSD from Samsung.  The Radeon Pro Vega SSG adapter will receive one 2-TB SSD with NVMe support.

The solution is aimed at processing video with a resolution of 8K.  It is reported that the novelty makes it possible to raise the playback speed of frames with a resolution of 8K from 17 to 90+ frames per second.  Note, since AMD Vega architecture uses HBM2 memory as a capacitive buffer for communication with peripheral memory, the solution in the form of Radeon Pro Vega SSG turns out to be very interesting.  More details about AMD innovations should be expected in a couple of weeks from the Computex 2017 fields.

POSTER: computer news   ||    ON THE PROSPECTS OF CONTRACT MANUFACTURING SAMSUNG

DATE:2017-05-17

Not so long ago it became known that  Samsung Electronics company plans to provide some freedom to the division, which deals with the contract production of semiconductors.  More precisely, Samsung's production, which is mainly LSI and memory, will be divided into three separate divisions, the third of which will be the business of producing chips under the contract.  It is this third unit that will become a separate, relatively independent subsidiary.

According to analysts, today Samsung can own about 8% of the contract semiconductor market.  After gaining independence, the share of Samsung Foundry in the market for contract manufacturing of chips within five years can grow by 2% per year.  Thus, the company will begin to select shares from competitors, the main of which is the company TSMC.  By the way, GlobalFoundries company , which received from Samsung technical standards with 32- and 28-nm standards, and also, it seems, the technological process of work with FD-SOI substrates, can suffer more than others.  Until now, Samsung and GlobalFoundries have virtually no conflict of interest, which will inevitably appear in the process of becoming Samsung Foundry.

Returning to TSMC, we add that analysts predict the loss of the company's share in the market of contract chips at 1% per year for five years.  Now TSMC holds about 60% of the contract semiconductor market.  Undoubtedly, TSMC will do everything possible to prevent this from happening.  Therefore, the establishment of Samsung Foundry will inevitably be accompanied by the intensification of competition and the active development of the most advanced technical processes.  In other words, customers and consumers will benefit from this.

POSTER: computer news   ||    SK HYNIX BEGINS SHIPPING HBM2 MEMORY THIS QUARTER

DATE:2017-05-16

South Korean company SK Hynix recently demonstrated samples of memory type GDDR6 , capable of operating at 16 GHz QDR.  Meanwhile, in the recently updated catalog of memory chips on the site of this manufacturer GDDR6 appears with weaker characteristics.  If you believe the official information, the eight-gigabit GDDR6 chips of the SK brand Hynix will reach data rates of 12-14 Gb / s only by the fourth quarter.  Before the turn in 16 Gbit / s they will get, most likely, already next year.

By the end of the year SK Hynix will also offer eight-gigabit GDDR5 chips with a frequency of 10 GHz QDR.  Unlike GDDR6, which is satisfied with voltage 1.35 V, GDDR5 memory at maximum speeds operates at 1.5 V or even 1.55 V.

Finally, SK Hynix has been offering HBM2 memory chips of 4 GB with a nominal frequency of 1.6 GHz since this quarter.

If NVIDIA Tesla V100 accelerators are assigned the presence of 16 GB of HBM2 memory (four chips), then there is no intelligible information about the amount of AMD Radeon RX Vega memory.  According to one data, it will be limited to 8 GB, for others, more fresh - it is possible that there are also products with 16 GB of memory.

POSTER: c   ||   A SIMPLE NVIDIA GTX 1080 TI FOUNDERS EDITION VOLTMODE FOR BETTER OVERCLOCKING

DATE:2017-05-16

Specialist in overclocking computer systems under the Der8auer nickname on his YouTube channel shared a video instruction on how to modify the power supply system of the NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition video card to achieve better graphics overclocking.  This modification is available to everyone.

The video card NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition is powered by 6-pin and 8-pin PCIe connectors and from the PCIe slot on the motherboard.  The nominal consumption of the adapter reaches 250 watts.  For overclocking with the utility MSI Afterburner you can increase the power (consumption) of the video card up to 120% or up to 300 W.  However, while running in the benchmark Unigine Superposition shows the instability of the adapter, but further increase in power by regular means is impossible.

Note, in the regular mode, the system consumes 396 watts, and when overclocked by MSI Afterburner, its consumption rises to 445 watts.
