POSTER: computer news   ||    COMPAL BELIEVES THAT DEMAND FOR PC WILL RETURN TO GROWTH THIS YEAR

DATE:2017-05-12

The status of a large contract manufacturer of computers and mobile devices allows the president of Compal Electronics to make authoritative statements and forecasts about the development trend of the market.  As the DigiTimes resource notes , the head of this contract manufacturer believes that the demand for personal computers will return to growth already this year.  In any case, Compal itself expects to increase PC production volumes by 10% to 40 million units at the end of the year.

There are, however, some important reservations.  First, the demand for PCs will begin to grow mainly from corporate consumers, who will face the end of the cycle of support for Windows 7. Secondly, the demand for computers from the consumer market will also grow, albeit gradually.  In any case, European consumers have already begun to take an active interest in new computers, as noted in Compal.

In the current quarter, there is a shortage of RAM and displays, but the situation is still better than before.  Demand and supply will approach equilibrium in the third quarter, according to President Compal.  Solid-state drives will remain in deficit until 2018, because production capacity is simply not enough.

POSTER: computer news   ||    MICROSOFT GLASSES FOR MIXED REALITY GOT CONTROLLERS

DATE:2017-05-12

In addition to HoloLens glasses for the mixed reality (Windows Mixed Reality), Microsoft creates an entire ecosystem, in the expansion of which all interested producers can take.  Glasses for mixed (or augmented) reality with support for HoloLens elements are already offered to Acer and HP.  More precisely, these are the Windows Mixed Reality Headset Developer Edition for developers.  The price of such sets, if compared with the glasses of HTC and Oculus, is relatively small and is $ 300.  Below is a photo of Acer's glasses.  A similar device is also sold by HP for $ 330.

Yesterday, for the Windows Mixed Reality platform, the original controller is presented.  In a set with glasses pair of controllers will cost $ 100 ($ 400 for a set with glasses).  Controllers for HoloLens do not require a beacon system for recognizing gestures with their help.  They are equipped with a system of light-emitting diodes, movement and orientation change of which in the space is read by the video cameras built into glasses.

Each controller is equipped with switches, an analog joystick and a small round touch pad.  With the help of gestures, the user can capture virtual objects, move them and do a lot of other actions in a mixed reality.  Earlier this month, representatives of Acer reported that since March the company shipped about a thousand sets of Windows Mixed Reality Headset Developer Edition.  Presence of the controller, probably, will warm up interest to working out.  Now the holder of glasses can be not only an observer, but also an active participant in the environment with augmented reality.

POSTER: computer news   ||    HARD DRIVES WILL CONTINUE TO BE USED IN CARS UNTIL THE END OF THE DECADE

DATE:2017-05-12

This week, Western Digital Corporation introduced solid-state drives of the iNAND 7250A series, which will be used in automotive technology.  The speed of writing sequential data of 100 MB / s and a read speed of 300 MB / s, but these drives can operate at temperatures from minus forty to plus eighty-five degrees Celsius, and in some versions - up to 105 degrees Celsius.

Colleagues from the EE Times website reacted to this announcement in a very peculiar way - they applied for comments to industry experts and a representative of Western Digital Corporation to understand what volumes of storage will be needed for cars of the near future to store important information.  According to Intel soon cars will generate up to 4 TB of information per day.

First, as experts explain, "generating" does not mean "storing".  Part of the information will be sent to the "cloud", in the internal memory the car will store and process only the most important.  Moreover, the needs in the amount of stored information will be much more modest than described by Intel.  Secondly, in the next five years, cars will store up to five hundred gigabytes of information on average.

All this information will be distributed among different systems and types of drives.  For example, hard drives in the infotainment system will last at least until the end of the decade.  Solid-state drives can not yet compete with them either in price or in volume.  Toshiba, for example, offers hard drives for car entertainment systems with a capacity of up to 320 GB.

In addition to entertainment systems, capacious storage will require an autopilot system - not only for storing processed images and information received from sensors, but also for detailed digital maps of the terrain.  Only cards can hold up to 256 GB of memory.  A decent amount will be the software "autopilot", which should be constantly updated to improve the algorithms.  The amount of on-board memory will indirectly affect the cost of a specific vehicle configuration.

POSTER: computer news   ||   SLI-BRIDGES ASUS WITH RGB-BACKLIGHT AURA

DATE:2017-05-12

The appearance of LED backlight with a variable RGB-spectrum pushed manufacturers of components to some consolidation.  It is enough to teach components with RGB-backlighting to "understand" each other and control software.  Colleagues from the site AKIBA PC Hotline reported on the appearance in the Japanese retail of new SLI-bridges Asus for motherboards and video cards equipped with proprietary RGB-illumination Aura.

The bridges are offered in two versions, providing for the separation of two graphics cards into four and three expansion slots, respectively.  The accessories are compatible with video cards from GeForce GTX 1070 to NVIDIA Titan Xp, implying the use of an interface with increased bandwidth.

The color of the backlight is controlled both from the BIOS of the motherboard, and with the help of a special application - in this case the bridge needs to be connected to the motherboard using a cable.  If this is not done, the color will change cyclically in automatic mode, and the user will be able to "freeze" the liked shade by touching the Asus ROG logo on the bridge casing.
