DATE:2017-04-23

While it is not entirely clear what the initiative of Apple for testing cars with automatic control will result in, but on the roads of California three prototypes of "robots" will appear already this year.  The corporation continues to seek new market niches, and Bloomberg agency this week announced the move to work in a new division of Apple two Google specialists who previously specialized in the development of satellites and related technologies.

Last year it became known that Apple could become a co-investor of the Boeing program to create a group of suborbital telecommunications satellites that would help provide access to wireless networks to residents of those regions of the planet where the development of terrestrial telecommunications infrastructure leaves much to be desired.  Facebook in its time also acted with a similar initiative, but preferred to place telecommunications equipment on unmanned aerial vehicles.  Google itself within the Loon project proved that the equipment can be lifted to the height and using balloons that can fly without stopping for up to six months.

While there is no way to determine for what purposes Apple is going to use suborbital satellites.  This may be not so much the goal of organizing wireless networks, as the task of aerial photography.  At least, the people who came to Google from the Google team in the last decade founded Skybox Imaging, which specialized specifically in the creation of equipment for aerial photography.  In 2014, it was bought by Google, and to this day the founders of Skybox Imaging worked in the state of the search giant.  Perhaps Apple is trying to develop its own cartographic services using aerial photography, carried out with the help of satellites.

POSTER: computer news   ||   THE IMPACT OF AMD RYZEN AND SMT CORES NUMBER ON GAMES AND APPLICATIONS

DATE:2017-04-22

The popular French resource Hardware.fr conducted its own  study of the influence of the number of cores in AMD Ryzen processors and multithreading support on modern applications and popular games.  From this point of view, Ryzen processors are very convenient.  Support for SMT can be deactivated, and for the difference in the cores the clock speed of the corresponding Ryzen models is practically unaffected.  Thus, the frequencies of the 6-core model R5 1600X and 8-core R7 1800X are exactly the same and equal to 3.6 / 3.7 GHz.  So theoretically the difference in performance of these models will approach to 33% and only due to the difference in the number of cores / threads.  The Ryzen 5 1500X with 4 cores has a higher frequency at 100 MHz, which gives it a theoretical superiority of 2.8% compared to the frequencies of the 6- and 8-core models, while the "core" superiority between the Ryzen 5 1500X and the R5 1600X achieves 50%.

The source took for 100% the performance of the 4-nuclear model Ryzen 5 1500X.  How much the performance of the system has changed with the increase in the number of cores to 6 and 8 pieces, we look below on the graph.

Professional applications, which obviously massively responded to the increase in the number of cores, and the difference in the speed of work of the 4-core system and 6-core did approach 50%.  Particularly well on the growth of the number of nuclei reacted Stockfish, Komodo and codec x264.  Three applications, however, behaved differently.  The programs 7-Zip and WinRAR showed a somewhat worse scalability, but for this it is necessary to blame the shortcomings in the operation of the AMD Ryzen platform memory system.  A bad result was obtained at the launch of Lightroom, which can be explained by the fact that the software does not yet know how to work with the new AMD processors.  On average, the transition from the 1500X model to the 1600X gave 44% performance gain, and the transition from 1600X to 1800X added 26.8%.  In both cases, the approximation to the theoretical limit is noticeable.

How the change in the number of cores affects games, look at another graph (above).  Unlike applications, as you can see, games are less optimized for working on multi-core platforms.  But the effect of nuclear growth is still there.  Best of all, the Warhammer game (with patch 1.6.0, which correctly recognizes SMT) responded to the increase in cores.  At the transition from 4 cores to 6, the speed increase was 26.9%.  But the transition from 6 cores to 8 gave a modest increase of 3.4%.  Another game, eagerly responding to the core, was Battlefield 1. The worst thing was the increase in the number of cores reacted to the game Project Cars.  On average, the transition from 1500X to 1600X showed an increase in performance in games by 12.7%.  The transition from 6 cores to 8 increased the speed in games by only 2.6%.

Now about the effect of multithreading (SMT) on applications.  Disabling of SMT technology is accepted for 100%.  This is also interesting for the reason that Intel Core i5 models do not support HyperThreading.

Looking at the graph immediately strikes the point that with SMT processors with fewer cores work better.  After activation of SMT, individual applications show growth of up to 40% and 47% (Komodo and Visual Studio).  The x264 codec responded smoothly to the SMT disconnection / inclusion, and the x265 codec showed a bias towards a smaller number of cores.  The Lightroom editor again excelled - went into negative after the activation of multithreading, which indicates the lack of support for the package of this technology.

Finally, about the impact of SMT on games.  For quad-core systems, activation of SMT has proved to be the best.  Performance has increased by about 20% in games Witcher 3, Civilization VI and F1 2016. For 6-core and 8-core processors, it's worse.  The lack of optimization for AMD processors is indicated by the fact that the inclusion of SMT in a number of games led to a decrease in performance.  On average, the performance for six-core processors increased by 4.6%, and for eight-core processors it decreased by 1.4%.  In other words, AMD's 6- and 8-core AMD Ryzen processors can not yet be considered the optimal choice for games.

POSTER: computer news   ||    NEURAL INTERFACE THE MASK WILL APPEAR IN 2021 AND WILL BECOME PUBLIC IN 2027

DATE:2017-04-22

Let's remind, Ilon Mask recently has informed on the organization of research medical company Neuralink which is going to develop the comprehensive interface for connection of a brain of the person to a computer or to a brain of other person.  In a recent interview,  Ilon Mask announced a number of details on which his new company will work.

The first ready-to-use machine interface Mask promises to appear in four years.  This will be "metal lace" with contacts of micron size.  During this time, the legal and legal aspects of implanting the human-machine interface into the human brain will be coordinated, and solutions for restoring the brain with serious injuries after trauma, stroke or other surgical interventions are created.

According to Mask, the machine interface will be widely used later - in 8-10 years.  This is also necessary for the reason that computers with their ability to deep machine learning and with the advent of artificial intelligence will quickly bypass a person by intelligence and ingenuity.  .  Speech and especially typing are slow interfaces that prevent people from exchanging information faster.  We must learn to transmit images and "thoughts".

We have no doubt that in four years you can learn how to implant electrodes in the brain.  The only problem is that by and large the human brain remains a "black box".  To translate an array of impulses in the human brain into something that is understandable for deciphering is a task whose solution may simply not be in the foreseeable future.

POSTER: computer news   ||   AUTOPILOT APPLE WILL BE ABLE TO STORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE MOMENTS PRECEDING THE ACCIDENT

DATE:2017-04-22

Apple, still not commenting on rumors about intentions to create either a car or software to automatically manage it, recently had to step out of the shadows , having received permission from the Californian authorities to test three prototypes based on the Lexus RX450h with the involvement of six test drivers.

As explained by the publication Reuters , which has access to official documents of Apple, their public version does not give any idea of the automatic control system of cars that the company is going to experience.  The main part of the document is devoted to instructions for testers, who should intervene in the system at the most dangerous moments.  One of the fragments of the text even mentions the presence of a "control joystick", but the use of Lexus serial crossovers at the first stage of testing certainly implies the presence of classical controls in the form of a rudder, pedals and a gear lever.

From the features of the control system, only the ability to record and save the monitored parameters is mentioned, which will help, if necessary, restore the picture of events preceding the hypothetical traffic accident.  On which sensors the automatic control system is based, it is not specified, but there are certainly several cameras, like most competitors.  By the way, the system is called Apple as a "platform for development."  It can not be ruled out that the control algorithms developed by Apple will be offered to third-party car manufacturers.  Vehicles will again be divided into two camps: Apple (iOS) vs Google (Waymo) Android?
