POSTER: computer news   ||    FUJITSU OFFERS A SERIAL SOLUTION FOR COOLING SERVERS BY DIPPING INTO A LIQUID

DATE:2017-03-22

For a long time, experiments with the cooling of computer components by immersion in dielectric liquid remained foci , designed to draw attention to the products of a particular brand.  Only recently, manufacturers of serious equipment began to talk about the possibility of using this method of cooling in the server segment.  In any case, Intel and SGI became interested in this topic, and Hitachi decided to declare that its helium-filled hard drives for cooling by immersion in liquid are best suited .

Colleagues from the site Heise.de began to cover the exposition of the exhibition CeBIT 2017, which is taking place these days in Hanover.  At the Fujitsu booth, he found a functioning sample of a server system cooled by a dive into a liquid.  The latter has dielectric properties, and allows you to immerse yourself in the standard components, without requiring any special preparation.

Fujitsu claims that one such "bath" is capable of effectively dissipating up to 30 kW of thermal power, taking up to 16 servers.  The density of the latter is increased, the need for fans and air conditioners disappears, and the server components immersed in the liquid are also protected from the effects of atmospheric air, which has an ideal composition far from anywhere in the world.  The power consumption for cooling server objects can be reduced by up to 40%.  Experiments with the cooling of computer technology by immersion in liquid have been carried out since the mid-eighties of the last century, but only now they have come to the stage of industrial use.

POSTER: computer news   ||    TOSHIBA PREDICTS THE EXIT FROM THE MARKET OF HIGH-SPEED HARD DRIVES

DATE:2017-03-22

Hard drives with a high spindle speed at a certain stage of the drive evolution were registered even in the consumer market segment  , although their main audience was always concentrated in the server segment.  Colleagues from the site Golem.de at CeBIT 2017 were at the stand of Toshiba, which nominally is the third player in the hard drive segment, although its share now does not exceed 10%.  However, modest production volumes do not prevent Toshiba from making forecasts for the development of the entire industry.

According to the manufacturer representatives  , to produce hard drives with a spindle rotation speed of 15,000 rpm there is no more sense - they are not so fast, as expensive.  In addition, the limit on the volume around 600 GB does not allow  to compete with other types of drives.  If we talk about hard drives with a spindle speed of 10,000 rpm, then Toshiba intends to release another generation of related products.  Their volume will be limited to 1.8 TB.  However, even the demand for such drives is steadily declining, and Toshiba believes that in the foreseeable future, more capacious hard drives with a spindle speed of not more than 7,200 rpm, and solid-state drives that will be used in cases where it is important Speed.

To increase the amount of data stored on hard disks with a spindle speed of 7200 rpm, Toshiba is assembled by using helium and increasing the number of magnetic plates in one enclosure.  At the same time, Toshiba believes that for a more efficient use of SSD in the server segment, new interfaces are needed that take into account the specifics of this market.

POSTER: computer news   ||    BMW WILL ACTIVELY ELECTRIFY THEIR CARS

DATE:2017-03-22

German automaker BMW recently for the first time in many years lost the palm of the championship to Mercedes-Benz, if we talk about the number of cars sold by the "big three", and return the confidence of consumers the Bavarians are assembled in a very original way.  As explained by the publication Heise.de , BMW will actively introduce a hybrid and electric drive throughout the family of cars of the brand.

In particular, already by the end of this year, BMW expects to sell at least 100,000 cars with electrification elements of the drive, which roughly corresponds to 5% of total sales.  By 2025, a serial electric vehicle on hydrogen fuel cells will be introduced.  By the same date, up to 25% of all new cars BMW must either become hybrid with the ability to recharge from the network, or use a clean electric drive.  Electro-electric versions will appear in all series of car brands, in 2019 there will be electrification Mini and BMW X3.

BMW also intends to participate in the fifth season of Formula E races using "electric cars".  Apparently, this is an image step aimed at promoting the serial electric vehicles and brand hybrids.  In the race already involved Renault, Citroen, Mahindra, Jaguar, Audi, NextEV and Faraday Future.  The last two companies are relatively young electric vehicle manufacturers.

POSTER: computer news   ||   INTEL HAS NOT YET LOWERED THE PRICE OF ITS PROCESSORS

DATE:2017-03-22

Some people immediately after the announcement of  AMD Ryzen processors found confidence in the imminent decrease in prices for Intel Broadwell-E processors.  Fortunately, one of the online stores even showed generous discounts. Intel representatives  ,  denied the company had plans to reduce processor prices in the foreseeable future, and the PCWorld site tried to raise this issue again in its investigation concerning some misconceptions about  AMD Ryzen processors.

First, colleagues asked Intel representatives, and they confirmed that news reports about the impending price reduction "were inaccurate."  Secondly, the specificity of the Micro Center store, which demonstrated the most "generous discounts" on Broadwell-E after the release of Ryzen, allows to assert that this seller is ready to go to dumping in the processor segment in order to increase the turnover of other goods by attracting buyers.  In addition, the amount of discounts is greatly exaggerated by the store itself - all of these Intel processors have long been sold at lower prices in other outlets, and if Broadwell-E and became cheaper after the release of Ryzen, then only a dozen or two US dollars.  Note that at the time of publication of this material, the official price list of Intel on the manufacturer's website contained prices for processors that have not changed since the third of January this year.

Interestingly, the authors of the investigation still do not rule out that Intel will lower the prices for its processors, but such measures may have to do with the expansion of the Ryzen processor range, and not the exception of the older models with eight cores.  As we know, Ryzen 5 models will be available only in mid-April, so Intel will have to wait for the next quarter, if any, to respond.
