On Sunday, March 19, Intel announced the first commercial hard drive on solid-state memory 3D XPoint - a server SSD Optane DC P4800X with a capacity of 375 GB. Â Previously, Micron, which operates a plant in Utah, where the memory 3D XPoint, reported that monthly produced about 10 thousand plates with chips of this type of nonvolatile memory.
Note, Micron is not yet in a hurry to announce the beginning of  commercial versions solid-state drives on 3D XPoint memory (in the Micron version this will be a line of SSD QuantX).  It is not difficult to imagine that the data of the microcircuit is still in short supply.  In the second quarter, Intel will add to the series  DC P4800X model capacity of 750 GB and 375-GB version in a 2.5-inch form factor U.2, and in the second half will begin to supply a 1.5-TB version in this series.
 But all this in the future, but for now Intel customers can only buy a 375GB drive at $ 1520, which is "only" three times more expensive than a similar SSD in NAND memory.
In 2015, when Intel announced the development of 3D XPoint memory, it set the bar so high, reporting on the qualitative characteristics of a new memory type . Â Recall, SSD on 3D XPoint promised a 1000-fold advantage in performance in comparison with NAND, 1000-fold increase in resistance to wear and 10-time increase in the storage density of information compared to DRAM. Â While these promises resulted in a 100-fold reduction in reading delays (with reservations), a 3-fold increase in resistance to
wear, and a 4-fold increase in the recording density compared to DRAM (and a 3-fold increase in the cost of storing one bit of data ).
The full characteristics of the 375-GB SSD Optane DC P4800X hit the network a month before the announcement. Â They turned out to be real. Â Linear speeds of the model reach 2.4 / 2.0 GB / s for reading / writing. Â For random speed blocks in terms of IOPS can reach 550 thousand for reading and 500 thousand for recording. Â The peculiarity of the work of Intel Optane drives is that they do not support redundant memory, as in the case of SSD on NAND. Â However, part of the capacity in Optane
drives is given for operations with ECC, firmware and metadata, which is similar in principle to working with SSD on NAND memory - in each case this increases the reliability of the drives.
The first model SSD on the memory of 3D XPoint got a fantastically small delay when accessing the memory (less than 10 µs). Â At the same time, the recording speed is stable high even at significant loads (graph above). Â On the chart below, Intel proves that Optane drives are also optimized for small queues of commands (typical for server loads), and they look much more attractive than SSDs on NAND memory.
On the model 375 GB SSD Optane DC P4800X, the company gives a 3-year warranty and a resource of 30 complete rewrites per day for this period.  In the future, the warranty will be extended to 5 years.  In addition, the drive uses a 20-nm 128-Gbit 3D XPoint chip.  The controller in the SSD Optane DC P4800X 375 GB supports seven channels of memory access.  In the version of 375 GB for each channel, four memory chips are inserted (only 28 pieces).  According to Intel representative  ,
