DATE:2017-08-14

Soon we will start living in the "Internet of things", and our own tiny sensors will be built into the objects of the city infrastructure.  They will transmit information over wireless networks, and most of them do not need traditional sources of energy for continuous operation.  First, some of these devices can be equipped with solar cells.  Secondly, some sensors can be powered by tiny piezo generators that convert mechanical vibrations into electricity.

Of course, working with a headset prototype in the form of a printed circuit board, which is consistently switched between the receiving and transmitting mode, it is difficult to call "a viable product," but the authors of the development are confident that in the future such principles can find application in serial devices.  For full-fledged operation with powerful smartphones, such a power source is not enough, but make an emergency call with a discharged battery should work.

British scientists are also considering another way of powering smartphones - with the help of supercapacitors, which are charged in a matter of minutes.

POSTER: computer news   ||   THE WORLD RECORD UNIGINE HEAVEN XTREME IS UPDATED WITH THE HELP OF CORE I7-7740X AND GEFORCE GTX 1080 TI

DATE:2017-08-14

Exactly two weeks ago the American enthusiast Splave was already updating the world record of Unigine Heaven Xtreme with the combination of the central processor Core i7-7740X and video card GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, and today we are ready to tell about his fresh achievement corresponding to 11 736,45 DX11 points.

This time, the American overclocker overclocked the CPU to 7.1 GHz while keeping all four cores active, but with Hyper-Threading disabled.  The video card worked at frequencies of 2550/12000 MHz, and the author claims that he found a backup copy of this result on his USB-drive.

THE WORLD RECORD UNIGINE HEAVEN XTREME IS UPDATED WITH THE HELP OF CORE I7-7740X AND GEFORCE GTX 1080 TI

POSTER: computer news   ||   THE SPEED OF RADEON RX VEGA 64

DATE:2017-08-14

The Chinese resource ChipHell, compares the performance of several video cards in an abstract set of gaming applications.

The version of Radeon RX Vega 64 with air cooling system, according to this source, is slightly faster than the GeForce GTX 1080. In principle, this is a good deal, because it was previously expected that the new AMD will be located between the GeForce GTX 1070 and GeForce GTX 1080.

But the resource Toolius Tech publishes detailed photos of the early prototype Radeon RX Vega 56. Such a video card, according to the the creators, could do work with an air cooling system with three fans.  In the reference version, as far as we can judge, Radeon RX Vega 56 will have the same cooling system with Radeon RX Vega 64 with a single fan of tangential type.

To the power supply this variant Radeon RX Vega 56 should be connected through a combination of six- and eight-pin connectors.  In the serial reference version, two eight-pin connectors are used.

The radiator of the cooling system, penetrated by heat pipes, extends far beyond the limits of the printed circuit board.  In other photos, not only the diagnostic connectors are visible, but also the "XT" marking, indicating the belonging to the younger model of the Radeon RX Vega family.

Those who wish can learn other identification tags of the video card independently.

POSTER: computer news   ||    THE HEAD OF NVIDIA ADMITTED THAT VOLTA COSTS A LOT IN PRODUCTION

DATE:2017-08-11

Samsung has announced an increase in the volume of memory output HBM2 type just before the formal announcement of the graphics solutions of the AMD Vega family.  As we later managed to confirm, Vega GPUs are really equipped with Samsung's HBM2 memory.  Now we can assume that NVIDIA also left SK Hynix "on the sidelines" when choosing a supplier of HBM2 for the accelerators of Volta calculations.

The launch of mass production of such a large monolithic processor (211 billion transistors on an area of 815 square meters) required large material costs, as the head of NVIDIA admitted yesterday.  At the first stages, the output levels of the products are far from the targets, and there are "other difficulties".  According to him, the cost of producing one Volta generation accelerator ranges from a few hundred dollars to a thousand.  For this reason, the selling price is unlikely to be lower.  However, the founder of the company immediately adds that each Volta accelerator allows you to save hundreds of dollars.  At least in terms of computing performance.  Volta turned out to be 100 times faster than Kepler, which came out four years ago, and Kepler was already ten times faster than the central processors.

In short, in matters of pricing, if it comes to Volta, the CEO of NVIDIA shows calm, and argues that "the price will be favorable."  We emphasize that for the time being we are talking only about accelerators of computations, and not game video cards.  Volta head of the company considers the most difficult processor ever created, and is very proud of the team of specialists who worked on it.

During the year, NVIDIA's revenue in the data center solutions sector grew by 175%, but the company's management refuses to determine the degree of Volta's influence on the progress in financial performance.  While NVIDIA is simply happy that the Volta release is streamed.  In sufficient quantities, as the founder of the company underlines.
