POSTER: computer news   ||    AMD NAVI WILL OPEN THE WAY TO MULTI-CHIP GRAPHICS PROCESSORS

DATE:2017-08-11

NVIDIA is still proud of its ability to create large monolithic graphics processors with a large number of transistors, but itself is slowly exploring ways to retreat in the form of multi-chip graphics technology.

According to colleagues, the statements of Raja Koduri about the possibility of using the interface of Infinity Fabric in graphics solutions explicitly hint at the possibility of multi-chip GPUs, even within the framework of the Navi generation.  Each new technical process is more complicated.  Only a certain stagnation in the field of CrossFire could be embarrassing, but Infinity Fabric opens new prospects for developers.  In any case, this is only a private opinion, and we still have to find out which layout solutions AMD will use in the future.

AMD NAVI WILL OPEN THE WAY TO MULTI-CHIP GRAPHICS PROCESSORS

POSTER: computer news   ||   INSTEAD OF RYZEN THREADRIPPER, BUYERS PREFERRED MOTHERBOARDS

Since Thursday, Japanese stores lured future buyers of AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors with souvenir slippers, but access to commodity processors was not received until ten in the evening, so colleagues from AKIBA PC Hotline had the opportunity to assess the loyalty of the local public to AMD products.

The latter must include compatible motherboards and cooling systems.

We have repeatedly noted that in Japan imported electronics is heavily taxed, so computer components are offered at traditionally high prices.  In the case of the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X processor, which costs $ 999 in the US, it played a cruel joke with Japanese stores.  According to reporters, many buyers preferred to buy only motherboards with Socket TR4, and they bought processors "somewhere else".

INSTEAD OF RYZEN THREADRIPPER, BUYERS PREFERRED MOTHERBOARDS

POSTER: computer news   ||    DETAILS ABOUT THE WORK OF AMD RYZEN THREADRIPPER WITH MEMORY AND PCIE PERIPHERALS

DATE:2017-08-11

Yesterday can be considered the day when the sales of the world's most productive processors - 12 and 16-core AMD Ryzen Threadripper models started.  While a detailed review of the new products is being prepared, we will, in the hot pursuit, review a number of features of the Ryzen Threadripper with memory and PCIe peripherals.

Processors AMD Ryzen Threadripper, which is no longer a secret, physically consist of four 8-nuclear crystals "Summit Ridge", two of which are blanks.  This is the legacy of the packaging of AMD EPYC server processors, the number of cores in which reaches 32 pieces.  Such a structure, when conditionally close and distant controllers (memory channels and PCI Express lines) appear, imposes its own peculiarities (limitations) on the operation of the computer system as a whole.

In fact, each AMD Ryzen Threadripper processor is a dual-processor system with all the ensuing properties - increasing latency when accessing memory attached to the "second" processor, and the need to optimize gaming and mass software in the likeness of optimizing server software.  Otherwise, we are disappointed or, optimistically speaking, we will not be able to take full advantage of the potential inherent in AMD Ryzen Threadripper.

By default, AMD Ryzen Threadripper runs in nUMA mode (heterogeneous shared memory or local mode).  In the BIOS or in the AMD Ryzen Master utility (with the subsequent obligatory reboot of the system), you can choose a different mode - UMA (shared memory or distributed mode).  There is no switch on the fly.  In one case, programs can benefit from the choice of mode, in the other - to lose.  Select and experiment with users, although AMD will give its recommendations.  Also, to optimize the system operation, a physical rearrangement of the memory modules is required, if there are less than four (one module per chip or two modules per crystal).

In the local nUMA mode, we get minimal delays, but we lose two memory channels and, consequently, radically reduce the overall bandwidth of the memory system.  In the distributed UMA mode, we get all four memory channels, but we lose in delays when the core from one cluster accesses the memory controller of the core of the cluster in the second crystal.  According to AMD data for DDR4-3200 modules, delays in local mode can reach 66.2 ns, and in distributed mode - 86.9 ns. In practice, in the absence of programs optimization  , the difference can be many times.

A similar problem with the growth of delays can be observed with the choice of PCI Express lines, of which the Ryzen Threadripper processors have 64 pieces per two crystals.  Compensate for this feature  the company is an impressive package of simultaneously working PCI-e peripherals.  You can connect 8 devices to the processor simultaneously.  More precisely, one of them - the chipset x399 - is always connected and takes 4 lines.  The remaining 7 devices, for example, can be represented by four video cards and three SSDs or six video cards to speed up calculations and one SSD.

POSTER: computer news   ||    IN THE SECOND QUARTER, NVIDIA REVENUE GREW 1.5 TIMES

DATE:2017-08-11

NVIDIA  revenue grew by 56% per year, reaching a record $ 2 in the second quarter , 23 billion. In quarterly terms, the increase was modest - only 15%, but for such a season, and this is a very worthy change.  Most of the revenue from NVIDIA still comes from gaming solutions - 53%, and in the official press release, this time not only GeForce gaming video cards but also the graphics system of the Nintendo Switch game console were awarded.

We remind you that on the 30th of July the second quarter of 2018 of the financial year ended on the NVIDIA calendar.

Net profit and operating profit of NVIDIA more than doubled in a year, but the rate of profit rose by only half a percentage point, and compared to the first quarter of this year, it even decreased by one percentage point.  Blame for all the increased costs.  It is noteworthy that if the "automotive" segment as a whole demonstrates a moderate but steadily growing revenue, then directly Tegra processors for a year increased NVIDIA revenues twice.  Undoubtedly, here is the impact of the contract with Nintendo.

For the first time in a long time, the "OEM & IP" segment grew, mainly due to the growth in demand for OEM solutions, but NVIDIA itself stopped receiving license fees from Intel, which previously amounted to $ 66 million for the quarter.  Here there is a nuance: to the proceeds from the implementation of OEM-solutions, NVIDIA has added receipts from specialized products for "miners".  We will talk about this separately today, but for now, we simply note the accompanying increase in revenue by 54% in the annual comparison, and by 61% in quarterly terms.  The segment of solutions for data centers demonstrates good dynamics.  NVIDIA stresses that the accelerators of computing with the architecture of Volta in this quarter began to flow to software developers.

The head and founder of NVIDIA traditionally stayed silent until the company's CFO acted with a report prepared in advance, but actively participated in a question and answer session, which we will analyze in subsequent materials.
