To navigate in space, vehicles with an automatic control system uses accurate digital maps and a set of sensors that allow to recognize objects and determine the distance to them.  .  Meanwhile, some people have to challenge fate, just moving on city streets - in the modern metropolis is very difficult to navigate for those who denied the opportunity to see the world. Blind, in some cases, using a method called "echolocation"  determine the distance to surrounding objects, and even get some idea of their shape and size.   A group of European scientists created a set of sensors that could help  blind and visually impaired people with better navigate the streets in all weather conditions and visibility levels. A number of ideas have decided to borrow vehicles from autopilot.  For example, to determine the position of objects and distance to them will be using miniature ultrasonic radar, optical, laser radars ( "LIDAR") and ultra-wideband radioradarov.  The challenge is to maximize the integration of these devices into a compact body, which, together with the battery enough to use throughout the day tank would weigh no more than 200, the rated power consumption of such "smart cane" shall not exceed 0.5 watts.   Smart Cane must clearly recognize the surrounding objects in all weather conditions, in temperatures ranging from minus 20 to plus 40 degrees Celsius.    The first prototype of a "smart cane" will be established in September 2019, after which the device samples will be given to people with visual impairments to test in real conditions.    The device will use the voice interface and take into account the current position of the head of the person wearing the headset. The results obtained in the course of this work, technical solutions can be used in robotic systems, which also have to navigate the strange and "oversaturated" moving objects places.  Miniaturization of integrated sensors -  is an important task for the entire industry. On Monday kicked off an annual conference Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), where industry leaders talk about their achievements.  We hope for a lot of interesting information, but for now start with the message about the performance of  TSMC chief research arm , Cliff Hou .  The head of the world's largest chip maker developers said that over the years the current semiconductor design paradigm is outdated and needs to be replaced. According to him, over the past ten years, designers have become skilled in developing of SoC mobile, surround  with the proper tools and gaining specific experience.  Meanwhile, the experience and tools, as well as databases with elements for automatic design (EDA) are not well suited for the other three new areas: electronics for automobiles, items with an Internet connection and machine learning.   The transition to a new paradigm and tools are also due to the considerable complexity of design in recent years.  For example, the transition from 40-nm to 7 nm resistance metal layers doubled that every time it was necessary to take into account.  We can add more and more frequent use of vertical connections (columns or holes for metallization), a manufacturer with its own problems.  Besides TSMC use two different metals for metallization and contacts depending on required speed or high density arrangement of elements on the chip.  Ideally, all this must be considered in the design of automatic systems, chips and be able to rebuild on the type of problems .
