Last week, Japan hosted a conference NAS EXPO 2016. Today, only the lazy does not make processors.  There are the classic x86-based processors, there are processors cores with ARM and MIPS architectures.  There RISC / UNIX processor architectures, IBM and Oracle (Sun Microsystems).  There NVIDIA GPUs and accelerators GPGPU AMD.  There are a variety of processors in the hundreds and even thousands of cores.

Intel and IBM.  Each of these companies have the greatest weight in the data center market.  Intel has the largest companies,  IBM is much less, although over the years earned the credibility and enable IBM customers more or less confident about the future.  In particular, in the heterogeneous future.

 

Recently it became known that a new consortium OpenCAPI (Open Coherent Accelerator Processor Interface) is organized, led by IBM.  Also the word "open" in the title is present CAPI abbreviation.  The latter stands for a consistent interface for communication processors with accelerators. Finally, another consortium - Gen-Z.  Gen-Z was organized by the company AMD, ARM, Cray, Dell, HPE, Micron, Xilinx, Huawei, Samsung, SK Hynix, Broadcom and IDT.  Note, NVIDIA  and IBM are not the organizers, though, IBM participates in the project as an observer.  Gen-Z project aims to create a user-friendly interface or bus to work in concert with CPUs and accelerators storage arrays as the operational data, and with storage for long term storage of data.  In this case we are talking about a conventional DRAM, and the nonvolatile memory on.  Specifications Gen-Z, too, must be ready in 2016 and are designed to be an antagonist of the interface for the Intel Optane drives in all varieties - from DIMM to the SSD.

Alternating quarterly announcements opens contract manufacturer TSMC's semiconductor products.  Compared with the third quarter of last year, TSMC's managed to increase its revenues by 22.5% and net profit rose by 28.4%.  Compared with the previous quarter  this year, revenue increased by 17.4%, and net profit - by 33.4%.  For such a dynamic TSMC guidance thanks smartphone market, , the company provides sixty percent of revenue.  However, within five years, according to the company's management, in a leading position will the components market for high-performance computing (HPC) - I suppose we are talking about server components and all sorts of calculations accelerators.  Capacity Market HPC representatives TSMC estimated at $ 15 billion.

In the past quarter, TSMC has received the first digital projects 10-nm products.  This process technology will be used mainly for the manufacture of mobile processors, now TSMC already has five customers in this area.  Commercial shipments of 10-nm products are scheduled for the first quarter of next year.  It will mark the beginning of the transition of the mobile processor for the flagship processors with 16-nm to 10-nm process technology.

In the first half of 2017 and will be the first prototypes of 7-nm products, not less than 15-20 digital projects will be disbursed during 2017.  At 7-nm technology will be released not only mobile processors, but also components for high-performance computing.  In 2019 TSMC will begin production of 5-nm products.  The demand for advanced process technologies will be warmed not only smartphones, but also virtual reality devices.
