When you chose a notebook the first thing to focus on is the hardware used and battery life .
Acer and dell are very popular producer just like ASUS , Toshiba , HP .....
Current optimal configuration for notebook should include :
-Processor : Core 2 Duo processor (45 nm is preferable in consequence of lower power requirement === higher battery life)
-Memory : From 1 to 2 GB memory --> depending on use .
-Graphic : If no gaming @ all you can go with an integrated video core such as GMA 3100 , if u plan to game a bit The Geforce 8600 GM is good chose and finally for heavy gaming the 8800 GM is a must .
_ HDD : (DO not go with SSD (solid state disc) : Current failure rate is about 30 %) , HDD from 120 to 400 or even 500 --> depending on use .
- Screen : LCD 15 , 17  (True Bright technologies ) --> depending on use .
- battery : from 6 to 9 cells  --> depending on required offline operation time .
The weight can be also considered : such configuration can go from 1.3 KG to 2.2 KG (Lower = higher price)

I'm currently using an ASUS laptop, but if I had extra money when I was to buy my laptop I would go for HP. I had a bad experience with DELL so I wouldn't recommend it.

As said , Everything depends on hardware used on this notebook .
PS : I have not any problem with dell notebook , Just like any other producer there is some good and bad configuration ...
For me the dell Inspiron 6400 (used a while ago) was ultra good stable and fast .

Dell is much better than acer
And There is very important thing u should consider besides the specs,
{THE WARRANTY}
u should ask for how many years +fire,water,surge and international warranty this is very important if u travel alot
