No this is not common , There are some external disks witch are even faster than internals . May be your current model is just slow .

what is the full disk name ?

I had the same experience with my current cheap external hard drive. Is there a limit for the capacity of the external hard drive case? I'm planning to replace the 60 GB hard disk in it with a larger hard disk.

Kingston is a good brand, certainly here in the UK at least.
Speed of response can be affected by many things.  Firstly the connection type.  i.e. USB 1/2, Firewaire, or network.  Next you may have shadow copying set up, or even synchronization.  So while you are accessing your drive, Windows (if you are using it) might be creating shadow copies, or synchronising with your internal hard drive.

The only size limit for an external drive is that of your OS.  I am running a 750gig Icybox external with Server 2008...

It's mainly relay on the interface of your external HDD the best interface now is the esata then usb 2.0 then firewire then network
also if u gonna replace the hard be sure to buy a well performance one with as much cache as possible this will increase the burst speed very much but be sure what type the enclosure can handle (IDE,SATA,SATA2,....

I supposed he don't has a SCSI interface since he has just a desktop and SCSI mainly for servers also the SAS interface which is better

Certainly this is not a common problem. You must ask to the vendor from where you bought it about this problem.
If you have warranty for this external hard drive then you may get replacement.  Wink

Basically external HDD, no matter how much is the capacity should have no problem running in Windows OS. All external hard drives connect via USB nowadays and you should have no problems with them no matter what the size.
