Most of us just know that we need memory and that is stores stuff and that's it. I came across this page that has some good information on it and thought that I would share it with anyone who is like me and trying to educate yourself on what all stuff REALLY does... Here's the page
http://www.howstuffworks.com/computer-memory.htm
It explains the different types and needs and everything. Hope it helps someone like it did me

Right also check your motherboard manual to find out the correct memory slot for dual channel.

to add to to this question, why is more memory better than less? For example, if i have 2gbs of ram in my PC and decide to upgrade to 4, will there be a point to where it is just overkill or does your PC always utilize all of its ram resources, or is there a point where the amount of applications I'm running just doesn't utilize all of its memory?

First the more ram = the better = the more system resource , the same principle for HDD .
However, ram under 32 bits os is worthless over 3.2 GB since the operating system cannot see the whole memory .
Under 64 bits os the situation is improved, and u can use all the memory up to 64 GB ,
In our day for web surfing and simple task 2 Gb is more than enough , for gaming 4 Gb can be required in some case , 6 and 8 GB + are either for servers or for professional task as image and video editing .
