I have a motherboard with integrated raid controller.
Connected to it, i have 6 SATA drives in RAID 5.
What happens if i need to change my motherboard?
And how (if possible) can i prevent losing the 2TB on those disks?
(I have some hardware problems, relative to my mainboard, so i want to switch it with a diferent one.)

I hope someone can answare my questein Smiley
(And sorry for my bad english)

Welcome to the forum .  Wink
If your new motherboard use the same HDD raid controller than data will be fine , just plugs your HDD there and your raid array will be detected .

For example moving from X48 , p45 (ICH 10) to intel X58 (core i7) also (ICH10) will be fine
While moving from P35,X38 (ICH8) to P45 , X48()ICH10 = bad idea .
In this case i highly recommend a full back up in the last case .

What is your current motherboard and to which one u plan to update ?

This why i love PCI/PCI-e HDD controller , Just plug the controller on the new motherboard and all will work fine .

i highly recommend a full  buck up ,
AND why the raid  5 ?
 , for me 1 ) raid 0 for full performance , 2)Raid 1 : Full protection 3) Raid 10 (or 0 +1) for the combination to the two above .

RAID 5 is : Striped set with distributed parity or interleave parity. Distributed parity requires all drives but one to be present to operate; drive failure requires replacement, but the array is not destroyed by a single drive failure. Upon drive failure, any subsequent reads can be calculated from the distributed parity such that the drive failure is masked from the end user. The array will have data loss in the event of a second drive failure and is vulnerable until the data that was on the failed drive is rebuilt onto a replacement drive.

What is your current motherboard and to which one u plan to update ?

I have Asus Maximus Xtreme motherboard...
I dont know witch motherboard i want to update to, but since i'm using nVidia graphic cards, it should support SLI (witch the Asus dont (wrong information on the website i ordered from)), and it should also support DDR3 Ram...
I have also noticed that Asus has had some hardware trouble lately... I've had 3 Asus laptops the past 2 years, where the mainboard is dead, so i think i wil stay clear of Asus from now on, if possible...

Thanks for the quick reply btw Smiley

Thanks for the quick reply btw
You are welcome
Asus Maximus Xtreme motherboard is a intel Intel X38 with , ICH9R .Since it is Intel chipet it do not support NVIDIA SLI , But the next generation motherboard Intel X58 will do it (they will support CrossfireX and SLI).

The X58 motherboard will come with ICH10 Sad , SO there is no compatibility with your motherboard .Moreover moving to AMD (which do not make since) is even worse since they use another HDD controller .This was the theory .

In practice before writing this post i just plugged a raid 0 from ICH9R motherboard (Asus P35) to a ICH10R (Asus P6T ,X58) and all went fine , The array was detect and in working state .

So your are @99 % lucky , For me the transfer from ICH8 to ICH10 worked out , In this case windows refused to load with Windows BSOD due to driver failure , In theory reinstalling windows will fix this issue , But i was to lazy to do it  Grin Grin Grin Grin .
so i plugged again the HDD's in the P35 motherboard and installed the ICH10 drivers , Now back to the Asus X58 motherboard , in this case the windows was loading fine and i got the welcome screen ,  Wink

But even if this work for me and may work for u , it is always better to make a back up :
1) in case of raid fail and u have to copy again all data
2) just for safety a back up is always needed  Wink

Hope this will help

U may also compress all your data and burn to some disks but in your case over a load of Disk is required , except if u will back only the most important data .

I got an idea u may ask a freind with has some free space to host those file for u until u get your new motherboard and confirm the integrity of the raid array .
