Intel introduced a new version of the solid-state drives - NGFF. The standard allows the use of interfaces, SATA and PCI Express, and also defines five permissible length of the device.
NGFF devices come in two versions: Socket 2 and Socket 3. The first allows to use two SATA or PCI Express lanes to connect the SSD, wireless network adapters and other peripherals is not used for data storage. Socket 3 supports four PCI Express and will be used exclusively for high-speed SSD with up to 4 GB / s.
In addition to the slide with specifications Intel showed NGFF prototypes:
NGFF standard will be used in client devices, but in high-performance computing systems (eg, servers) plays an important role not only the speed of storage system, but also its capacity.
The resulting symbiosis is called SATA Express. Port capacity SATA Express can be up to 2 GB / s, but there is also a more advanced version - SFF-8639 - with up to 4 GB / s.
