Several weeks we gathered and generalized information about the Radeon HD 5800. And here, the long-awaited official announcement came.
RV870 differs from its predecessors not only in terms of new API support, but also in terms of quantitative characteristics. In comparison with RV790 the number of transistors increased by more than twice, from 959 to 2150 millions. In this case, the crystal area , due to the passage to the new, 40 nm technological process, grew not so strongly, with 256 sq. M.D. 330 sq. mm. Let us recall, briefly, the characteristics of  new AMD solutions  :
- Radeon HD 5870 - > $399, 20 SIMD blocks, 1600 stream processors, 80 sample units and textures filtering  , 32 blocks ROP,  256- bit memory bus , core clock frequency – 850 MHz, memory clock frequency GDDR5 : 1200 MHz (effective – 4800 MHz);
- Radeon HD 5850 - > $299, 18 SIMD blocks, 1440 stream processors, 72 units sample and textures filtering  , 32 blocks ROP,  256- bit memory bus , core clock frequency – 725 MHz, GDDR5 memory clock frequency : 1000 MHz (effective – 4000 MHz).
As show the first tests, elder model - Radeon HD 5870,  demonstrates a performance level up to 1.5-2  higher than in the current high end one chip NVIDIA card GeForce GTX 285, but on average the superiority reaches only 20-30%. Thus, this card often occurs a serious competitor for the two-chip radeon HD 4870 X2 and GeForce GTX 295. In this case temperature and noise conditions are modest Under load the chip temperature does not exceed 80 degrees , but noise is moderated. Using the regular cooling system it was possible to raise the graphic processor  frequency  to 950 MHz, which 100 MHz higher than default. In this case the card demonstrated a insignificant increase in the GPU temperature , which also did not exceed 80 degrees . T
NVIDIA at the given moment, can only reduce the prices of  current video card and to prepare the answer in the form of GT300, which will appear to the end of year. Related Products :
