It is considered that the passage to more thin technical process allow producer to reduce the prime cost for chip production and also increase the production volumes .
In the opinion of analysts, the growing expenditures for the mastery of new technological processes limit the possibilities of relatively small producers for passage to the new technological standards. In future the number of producers using thin technical processes can be reduced and in this elite club will enter important companies with large financial possibilities.
As example we examined the expenditures for production of microcircuits on 45 nm and 32 nm technologies. For example, building new factory for the production of chips 300 mm plates cost $3 billion with 45 nm technical process and $5-10 billion with 32 nm technical process. Expenditures for technological preparation grow with $2,4 billion to $3 billion respectively. The most modest expenditures relate to the development (design) of product - they can compose $20-50 mln. for 45 nm technology and $75 mln. for 32 nm technology.
According to the estimation of experts, company must have a profit from sales not less than $8,3 billion per year in order to pay for the passage on 65 nm technical process. With such value at the present moment only five companies can use it : Intel, Samsung, Texas instruments, STMicroelectronics and Toshiba. With passage on 45 nm and 32 nm technical processes the required sums of annual profit grow to $13,3 billion and $16,7 billion respectively. Let us note that we deal in this case about companies, which produce chips at their own factories.
But if company order separate services with the production of such chip, then expenditures can be substantially reduced. For example, around IBM are united many companies, as AMD, Chartered, Freescale, Infineon, Samsung, Toshiba and Sony. They together participate in the developments and bear expenditures on the preparation for passage to new technological standards. Then each participants in this union uses the result of this activity.
We assume that the examined problems do not concern only AMD and NVIDIA, which already already ordered technological preparation for the production of new chips from specialized companies as IBM, TSMC and UMC. building new factories and modernization of old part will require larger investments. It would be desirable to believe that the complicated financial conditions will not serve as reason for retarding the technical progress. Related Products :
