In search for technology that can provide reliable and fast interconnect in high performance computing systems, Intel acquired InfiniBand interface designer, in January this year. Purchase cost $ 125 million, but Intel is not limited and is willing to pay another $ 140 million for other interconnect technology, created by renowned designer supercomputer company Cray.
Under the deal , Intel will move at its disposal all Cray assets, associated with the development of interconnections, as well as the corresponding intellectual property, and 74 employee units.
As always in such cases, the transaction should go through the procedure of regulators approval. It is expected that the acquisition will be completed by the end of the second quarter. Cray, in turn, said that the deal will not affect the development of new supercomputer systems and support services are already commissioned computing systems. In addition, the developer relationships with partners as AMD and NVIDIA will not be affected .
