AMD is developing a technology fordynamic GPU overclocking , like NVIDIA GPU Boost. This technology could change the clock speed and GPU voltage (possibly memory) with load and temperature. With a library ADL, ISVs have access to this functionality in the driver level. In the current generation of GPU Radeon available technology Overdrive 5, and the new features will be included in Overdrive 6, which is likely to be realized in the next generation GPU AMD.
In describing Overdrive 6-documented three new features: frequency change GPU (ADL_OD6_CAPABILITY_SCLK_CUSTOMIZATION), change the memory frequency (ADL_OD6_CAPABILITY_MCLK_CUSTOMIZATION) and activity monitoring and load (ADL_OD6_CAPABILITY_GPU_ACTIVITY_MONITOR).
In models Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition and Radeon HD 7950 v2 technology used was PowerTune with Boost, following a rather simple principle. All applications have the ability to raise the frequency and decrease to the nominal value is performed in case of overload. The maximum value of high GPU frequency is quite limited.
A more flexible approach is built on six Overdrive setting frequency range with the load, power consumption and temperature.
