ASUS in early January presented the model ARES II . The product combines two Tahiti GPUs on a single board, which makes ARES II potentially fastest graphics card in the world.
The only serious contender for the ARES II is currently the GeForce GTX 690, which exists, it should be noted only in a reference design.
The test system was based on a motherboard ASUS P9X79 Deluxe with an Intel Core i7-3960X, RAM Corsair (DDR3-1866, 16GB) and SSD OCZ Vertex 3 240 GB. The role of the operating system performed Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit version), drivers AMD Catalyst 13.2 Beta 5 and NVIDIA GeForce 313.96.
The tests will be in game running with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels with the highest quality settings. In all the games there is a advantage of ARES II:
ARES II superiority evident in synthetic benchmarks:
But the GeForce GTX 690 shows less appetite for electricity: in games the difference reaches 212 watts at full load - 313 watts.
ARES II not only has an outstanding performance, but also a decent overclocking potential: in tests observers achieved stable operation of the card with the frequencies 1325/6800 MHz for the GPU core and memory, respectively. Performance at the same time increased by at least 10%.
If we consider the ARES II in terms of pure performance, no doubt, this card is the best . But given the cost - $ 1,500 for the ARES II and $ 1,000 for the GeForce GTX 690 - the ASUS proposal is not very promising .
