NEC wanted to produce mobile units, but suffered in the last two years losses forced the Japanese to reconsider. NEC is now determined to get rid of unprofitable assets, interest in which manifest local companies and Lenovo, seeking to enter the global smartphone market.
NEC is actively negotiating with potential buyers. In addition to Lenovo among applicants appear Japanese telecommunications company Marubeni Corp in partnership with TD Mobile and a joint venture between Toyota Tsusho and Denso, but these companies are willing to fight for a controlling stake in the mobile unit NEC.
