Some AMD partners released one of the latest video card with AGP 8x interface - this is the Radeon HD 3850 . These video card already appeared in sale, and therefore many users can examine the Radeon HD 3850 AGP as candidate for the following upgrade. The majority of motherboard with AGP 8x interface now work with old processors, which cannot open the entire potential of new video card . But here the question , if we decide to refresh old computer with video card replacement , is it possible to get an acceptable speed level in games?

Associates conducted the appropriate tests. Using the motherboard Asus P4S800D, processor Pentium of 4 3.2 GHz , 0.13 m core Northwood stepping D1, and new video card Radeon HD 3850 with AGP 8x interface from PowerColor company . This Graphic card is equipped with 512 mb Gddr-3 memory , it has 256- bit bus, it works at default frequencies 668/1656 MHz. For video chip cooling we have ZEROtherm cooler, witch is completely made from copper.

First it was possible to overclock the AGP- version Radeon HD 3850 to frequencies 720/1858 MHz. We note that the AGP- version Radeon HD 3850 can work only under Windows XP due to driver limitations , the realize of DirectX 10.1 support using this video card will not come out. Thus, all owners of such video card are limited to work with DirectX 9. Accordingly, The AGP- version Radeon HD 3850 cannot work under Windows vista, since the support at the drivers level is not provided.

Now let us pass to the test result.

Of course the central processor with a certain degree limits the video card speed, but progress is obvious in comparison with old video card. For example, Radeon HD 3850 exceeds GeForce FX 5900 nine times, and Radeon 9700 pro - eight times.

Was AGP in general ever pushed to its limits, before being replaced by PCI-E? I just bought this card and am excited to try PASSMARK and Sandra tests. Powercolor now has Vista drivers, only 32-bit. But, I don\'t know and 64-bit boards that still had AGP. Aside from PCI bussed XGP, which is a step BACKWARD from AGP, just to say you can have both PCI-E and \"AGP\" on the same board.
