In the first quarter of 2017, the supply of MediaTek chips for smartphones fell below 100 million units. And in the second quarter their supply will return to growth and will be about 110-120 million. This is reported by the Taiwanese business publication DigiTimes with reference to industry sources.
According to sources, in 2016 MediaTek shipped more than 480 million single-chip solutions for smartphones. But this year it may face a drop in shipments of mobile chips. The fact is that many large MediaTek clients, such as Meizu, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, have given away some orders for processors for their smartphones of Qualcomm. Despite the receipt of new orders from Samsung, the loss of some orders from Chinese smartphone manufacturers negatively affects the position of MediaTek.
According to Digitimes Research, in the first quarter of 2017, Qualcomm managed to increase its share in the market for smartphone processors in China to 30%, while MediaTek's share will fall below 40%.
