Not so long ago it became known that Samsung Electronics company plans to provide some freedom to the division, which deals with the contract production of semiconductors. More precisely, Samsung's production, which is mainly LSI and memory, will be divided into three separate divisions, the third of which will be the business of producing chips under the contract. It is this third unit that will become a separate, relatively independent subsidiary.
According to analysts, today Samsung can own about 8% of the contract semiconductor market. After gaining independence, the share of Samsung Foundry in the market for contract manufacturing of chips within five years can grow by 2% per year. Thus, the company will begin to select shares from competitors, the main of which is the company TSMC. By the way, GlobalFoundries company , which received from Samsung technical standards with 32- and 28-nm standards, and also, it seems, the technological process of work with FD-SOI substrates, can suffer more than others. Until now, Samsung and GlobalFoundries have virtually no conflict of interest, which will inevitably appear in the process of becoming Samsung Foundry.
Returning to TSMC, we add that analysts predict the loss of the company's share in the market of contract chips at 1% per year for five years. Now TSMC holds about 60% of the contract semiconductor market. Undoubtedly, TSMC will do everything possible to prevent this from happening. Therefore, the establishment of Samsung Foundry will inevitably be accompanied by the intensification of competition and the active development of the most advanced technical processes. In other words, customers and consumers will benefit from this.
