POSTER: computer news   ||    AMD EPYC PROCESSORS ARE OFFICIALLY PRESENTED

DATE:2017-06-21

After the debut of the architecture AMD Zen in the consumer segment in the form of Ryzen family models  , the turn-around  the server processors has come.  Yesterday late at night, AMD made it: officially introduced the 14-nm EPYC series 7000 processors, named the first models and shared information about the cost of new products that replaced the Opteron processors.  The first wave included 12 models of processors with different levels of performance and the number of physical cores to 32 pieces.  Of 12 models, by the way, 4 models with 32 cores and 64 threads.  AMD believes that the new products will be able to withstand partly the Intel Xeon processors of the Skylake generation, and not just Broadwell.

The flagship model EPYC 7601 with 32 cores and a base frequency of 2.2 GHz (in turbo mode - 3.2 GHz) has a TDP of 180 watts.  Also in the family there are 32-core models with slightly lower frequency, but with reduced consumption.  Two more 24-core models with the flagship EPYC 7451 (2.3 / 3.2 GHz) with the same TDP level equal to 180 W, and three 16-core models with the flagship EPYC 7351 (2.4 / 2.9 GHz) are on the lower step in the number of cores.  Consumption of the 16-nuclear model is at the level of 170 W.  One single 8-core model EPYC 7251 consumes up to 120 watts at frequencies of 2.1 / 2.9 GHz.

According to AMD, EPYC processors with normal load will be able to show operating frequencies close to maximum.  So, the 32-core EPYC 7601 with a base frequency of 2.2 GHz can raise the frequency for all cores to 2.7 GHz and up to 3.2 GHz for 12 or fewer cores at the same time.  The EPYC 7401 model with 24 cores for 8 or fewer cores supports operation at 3 GHz, accelerating all cores right away to 2.8 GHz (2 GHz base frequency).

The level of TDP EPYC, by the way, is greatly influenced by the values of memory clock frequencies.  For example, the model EPYC 7501 is characterized by a 170 W TDP when working with DDR4-2666 memory and 155 W TDP when working with DDR4-2400 memory.  This allows you to configure new AMD server platforms, depending on the requirements of the customer.

The 12 new products of 3 processors, AMD has prepared for work in uniprocessor configurations, while the rest are suitable for dual-processor configurations.  The server market by the way, basically consumes two-processor server systems.  AMD EPYC models for single-processor systems are marked with the suffix "P": EPYC 7551P, EPYC 7401P and EPYC 7351P with 32, 24 and 16 cores respectively.  EPYC P processors work at slightly higher clock speeds than dual-processor systems, although they do not differ in general specifications.  Let's add, on each processor socket in the system can account for up to 2 TB of RAM.

The structure of the EPYC processors repeats the structure of the Ryzen processors, so in the maximum 32-core configuration, the EPYC processor consists of four separate 8-core Zeppelin crystals interconnected by the Infinity Fabric bus.  For the 24-core version, six cores are deactivated.  In this case, you can not completely turn off one of the four crystals, because then there will be problems in the operation of the Infinity Fabric bus.  This means that even an 8-core processor will contain all four crystals, although in each of them only two cores will be activated.  It does not just look expensive, it's insanely expensive, but AMD considers such a practice justified.

The Infinity Fabric bus connects each core to each.  It is bi-directional, and each channel provides a transfer rate of up to 42 GB / s.  To reduce the consumption, the rate of exchange can be reduced, which gives more room for increasing TDP cores.  Between the two processors in the system are connected by four Infinity Fabric buses with a bandwidth of each up to 38 GB / s.

All models of EPYC processors, which AMD likes to repeat, have the same basic functions, including a complete set of 128 PCI Express lines.  They also support 8 memory channels per processor up to DDR4-2666 and contain all the other interfaces necessary for the work of the platform (USB, SATA and others).  The solution's processor connector is a 4094-pin LGA (SP3) that is not TR4 compatible for Ryzen Threadripper.

According to AMD internal tests, the EPYC models are much faster than the Intel Xeon models Broadwell EP generation.  For example, the 32-core EPYC 7601 model works in the SPEC test with integer values?up to 47% faster than the 22-core Intel Broadwell at 2.4 / 3.6 GHz and up to 75% faster when working with floating-point numbers.  Other models also outperform competitors close to the price from the opposite camp.  And individual solutions are even ready to bypass even two-processor configurations of "blue" ones.  Thus, the 32-core model EPYC 7551P is 21% ahead of the platform of two 12-core Intel Xeon E5-2650-v4 processors, proving to be more profitable also for power consumption.

As for the prices for new items, they are definitely more interesting than Intel's.  During the presentation of the EPYC processors in AMD, it was reported that the 32-core flagship (EPYC 7601) will be priced at wholesale lots of $ 4200.  For comparison, the competing product in the face of the Intel Xeon E5-2699A v4 model costs $ 4,938. But the EPYC 7601 is still 47% faster than the competitor.  Also, the company disclosed the price of EPYC 7301 ($ 825), which is 70% faster than Intel Xeon E5-2640 v4 priced at $ 939, and the price of EPYC 7551P ($ 2100), which is 21% ahead of Xeon E5-2650 v4 at $ 2386.

Supplies of systems on AMD EPYC processors are expected in late July.  This will take a number of major vendors and OEM-manufacturers, including companies ASUS, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, Supermicro and Tyan.
