In the past year, with the release of AMD processors phenom X4, video card radeon HD 3800 and chipset series AMD 790FX, AMD presented the platform spider, which was based on these those three parts. Such platform did not find popularity , since its performance was clearly lower than the expectations and enthusiasts demands , this is due to the relatively low video card and processor performance , which sometimes was inferior to the older dual core athlon X2 6400+.
AMD decided to release a new platform : Dragon .Instead of radeon HD 3800 AMD use the Radeon HD 4800, and the processor phenom X4 was replaced by the phenom II X4, on which AMD lays large hopes. The Chipset will remain the same : AMD 790FX.
Today appeared some slide from AMD presentation with the description of this new platform performance . The old platform was in the fastest configuration coupled with the processor phenom X4 9950, with 2.6 GHz clock frequency and radeon HD 3870 video card. The new dragon platform use the new presented processor phenom II X4 940, working at the clock frequency 3.0 GHz and the radeon HD 4870 video card .
The most interesting is the enthusiasts segment : games, the new platform considerably exceeds the old, due to the faster radeon HD 4870. However, phenom II X4 940 exceeds Phenom X4 9950 by up to 20-40%. We note that Phenom II X4 940 works at larger clock frequency. now here is the real comparison between the phenom X4 9950 and hypothetical phenom II X4, working at the clock frequency 2.6 GHz:
The performance in this case is improved by 5-20 % due to the increased to 6 MB cache in the third level, this of about 5-20%, in average such performance will allow AMD to make some competition to Intel : to the four core processors core 2 Quad q9xxx, which work at comparable frequencies.
