The G92 NVIDIA chip was recently released . The first solutions on its base appeared during November and December 2007 and were called GeForce 8800 GT and GeForce 8800 GTS 512 .
After several months the GeForce 8800 GTS 512 was updated to the intensive version : GeForce 9800 GTX, which got higher frequencies, intensive power-supply system, longer PCB, and also two six-pin power connector and two MIO interfaces for 3- way SLI support .
After three months, in order to oppose the Radeon HD 4850, NVIDIA released the GeForce 9800 GTX+. The matter got higher frequencies, and the G92 was updated to the cold version G92b, which was released on 55 NM technological process.
In this case the GeForce 8800 GT was renamed in GeForce 9800 GT practically without any changes. The only difference was the hybrid SLI support.
Now NVIDIA plan to rename the 8800 GT/9800 GT and GeForce 9800 GTX+ to GeForce GTS 240 and GeForce GTS 250 . Those solutions are based on G92 ( GTS prefix ), instead of GTX in elder versions, based on GT200. For the production of these video cards , NVIDIA will use both the new versions G92b, based on 55 NM technical process, and old G92, using the 65 NM technical process.
