AMD talked about platform Torrenza during June, after promising it they announced the first products with the support of this open platform in the second-half of 2006, to the majority of Torrenza users was looked to this annoucement as the distant future. This is pretty logic, since Torrenza is south platform, and its propagation in the segment table can began noticeably later.
One way or another, company Altera with collaboration with AMD, Sun Microsystems and XtremeData declared about the starting of this program, scientific research organizations will obtain the south systems, equipped with processors Opteron and coprocessors XtremeData XD1000 FPGA. The latter are module on base of chip Altera Stratix II FPGA (EP2S180), which is compatible with Opteron processors .
The application of this coprocessor allow to accelerate the work of separate applications into dozens times. Data processing, construction of images for the physicians, text search, net safety and power engineering - this was same exemple of application.
One of the first participants in the program was the university of the state Illinois, USA. This program is advantageous to both sides: producers obtain chance to roll Torrenza platform "in field conditions", and scientists obtain access to the new highly productive equipment. Related Products :
