ATI X1950 GT VS 7900GS REVIEW BENCHMARK AND OVERCLOCK By :video card review Posted:2007-03-08 xtreview is your : Video card - cpu - memory - Hard drive - power supply unit source WHEN everyone waits FOR R600, the first future 3D chip DirectX 10 FROM ATI, AMD company added the new Radeon X1950 GT, witch is new solution for medium range Under this reference we find the RV570LE , in other words this a  kind of  reduced Radeon X1950 Pro . But by how much it is reduced , will it able to complete with GeForce 7900 GS from NVIDIA? It also supports the activation of anti-aliasing with HDR . this video card  is equipped with video functionality as engine AVIVO. ATI also proposes a hardware acceleration with decoding video H.264 high definition and MPEG2. Radeon X1950 GT seen by pilots CATALYST 7.2A few months ago, ATI boosted RV570 ( Radeon X1950 Pro ), a true new graphics chip which benefited the integration of Crossfire electronics or the native  HDCP. Always made in 80nm, the chip preserves identical specifications with 36 pipelines  pixel shaders, 8 vertex units  and 12 texture units . The memory bus  remains as beforce  on 256 bits so the architecture of chip does not change compared to Radeon X1950 Pro, Radeon X1950 GT will be distinguished finally on the frequencies level . Thus Radeon X1950 Pro operates at 575 MHz, Radeon X1950 GT is satisfied with only 500 MHz. And the memory side, the frequency passes from 690 MHz to 600 MHz. The band-width theoretical will get lowered from 44 GB to 35 GB per second. Sapphire Radeon X1950 GT Sapphire is one of the first manufacturers to adopt Radeon X1950 GT. Physically the card takes again the reference design developed by ATI for its Radeon X1950 Pro and presents at the simple format slot. But here the PCB with power circuit was re-examined and differs  from the one in Radeon X1950 Pro. The card was the PCI-Express 16x and always has an additional power connector. Equipped with 256 Mb video memory, Radeon X1950 GT from Sapphire use the chips signed Samsung and certified with 1,2ns. The cooling system  consists here in a metal radiator, without coppers base , which is placed over the graphics and memories chip via thermal pads. The radiator is covered by the blue plastic colors and has a its end a small fan . This last is very and very noisy ..... :-( Radeon X1950 GT from  Sapphire At the end of card, we found the two connectors DVI and a mini-DIN for analogical video out . Level bundle, Sapphire proposes to us the traditional driver CD , a handbook, a stereo version of PowerDVD 6.0, cable S-Video, an adapter mini-DIN , a composite cable, two adapters DVI/VGA as well as a cable for exit component . We also finds the dongle Crossfire , and an electric adapter doubles Molex --> PCI-Express . Good surprise, the graphics card is delivered with Just Cause, a must play game. TwinTech GeForce 7900 GS We have already reviewed many time GeForce 7900 GS from NVIDIA witch was released at beginning of September 2006.  Technically, GeForce 7900 GS is a version G71 which animates GeForce 7900 GT and GTX. Its great characteristics are the presence of 20 pixels pipelines, 7 Vertex units and a memory bus  256 bits. The distributor of graphics card TwinTech proposes recently  GeForce 7900 GS overclocked version with Zalmann cooling. GeForce 7900 GS XXT, has a green PCB and work with connector PCI-Express 16x in addition to its power connector . GeForce 7900 GS XXT from TwinTech will occupy two slots because of its large cooler from Zalmann, witch is very quiet  . Curiously, this cooler do not get power directly from the video card but it use a free connector . video card TwinTech GeForce 7900 GS   This 7900 GS has 256 MB memory GDDR3, it use Samsung certified chips with 1.2ns. Its operation frequencies are set to 520 MHz for the graphics chip and 740 MHz for the memory. The series GeForce 7900 GS usually work at 450 MHz for the graphics chip and 660 MHz for the memory. The overclocking proposed by TwinTech is correct since it reaches the 15%. A disappointment on the other hand: two connectors DVI are not accompanied HDCP! Side bundle TwinTech proposes driver CD , installation book, an adapter DVI/VGA, a composite cable, a cable component and a double-molex cable PCIe.  To test the performances of Radeon X1950 GT we will compare it in particular to GeForce 7900 GS we use the following platform: Motherboard Asus P5W-DH Deluxe, Processor INTEL Core 2 X6800 Extreme, 2x1 GB DDR2 Corsair Twin2X 6400 C3, Hard disk Western DIGITAL Raptor 150 GB Serial-ATA 150 Our test system operated under Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 and was provided with the last driver available to the date of test, We used Catalyst 7.2 for card ATI and ForceWare 93.71 for NVIDIA card. On this platform, we will of course test Radeon X1950 GT but also Radeon X1950 Pro, Radeon X1900 XT , Radeon X1650 XT. Side NVIDIA, we will oppose the  GeForce 7900 GS from Twintech, but also GeForce 7900 GS not overclocked version with  GeForce 7900 GTX and also GeForce 7600 GT. 3DMark 06 - v1.1.0 We starts with 3DMark 06 where Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB manages to precede our GeForce 7900 GTX. Recent Radeon X1950 Pro finishes third whereas Radeon X1950 GT is shown appreciably faster than GeForce 7900 GS. The last card from ATI asserts a profit in 12% . Doom 3 - v1.3 A little less synthetic than 3DMark 06, Doom 3 always gives its preference to NVIDIA card and thanks to the optimized opengl driver. we find at the head the GeForce 7900 GTX we note that GeForce 7600 GT is faster than Radeon X1650 XT . GeForce 7900 GS at its default frequencies, is  better here than Radeon X1950 GT or Pro. This last model proving to be 13% faster than X1950 GT in 1920x1200. Far Cry v1.4 - HDR7 Here, our Radeon X1950 GT is in withdrawal vs GeForce 7900 GS, whereas the model  GeForce 7900 overclocked GS precedes Radeon X1950 Pro by ten percents. F.E.A.R. - v1.08 Under F.E.A.R., tested here in its last version, the performances of Radeon X1950 GT are about the same as GeForce 7900 GS. The overclocked model from Twintech succeeds in rising the performance of 7900gs to the level of Radeon X1950 Pro whereas GeForce 7900 GTX and Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB occupy, with equality, the highest place . The comparison of performances between Radeon X1950 GT and Radeon X1650 XT reveals here a profit in 44% in 1920x1200 . Splinter Concealment Chaos Theory v1.05 Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB is about faster than  GeForce 7900 GTX here. Radeon X1950 GT show similar performances to the GeForce 7900 GS, and vs Radeon X1650 XT, X1950 GT is 54% faster in 1920x1200. Vs Radeon X1950 GT,  Radeon X1950 Pro is nearly 13% faster  in 1920x1200. Half-Life 2 Lost Coast Under Half-Life 2, our two most powerful card the leader, GeForce 7900 GTX followed by Radeon X1900 XT. Radeon X1950 GT is 27% faster than GeForce 7600 GT, this last being with equality with Radeon X1650 XT. Radeon X1950 Pro thus preserves a considerable advantage over Radeon X1950 GT,  which reaches the 14% here. Call Of Duty 2 Call Of Duty push the Radeon X1900 XT to the tops which seem almost inaccessible to GeForce 7900 GTX. Radeon X1950 Pro finishes third here whereas GeForce 7900 GS overclocked from TwinTech does not manage better than Radeon X1950 GT which has the fourth place. The overclocking made by TwinTech allow to gain 14% in performances vs GeForce 7900 GS standard, but this was not sufficient to catch the X1950 GT. Supreme To order GeForce 7900 GTX get large win here whereas Radeon X1900 XT is with equality with GeForce 7900 GS overclocked from TwinTech. GeForce 7900 GS standard does slightly better than Radeon X1950 GT which is sixth in this classification . the GeForce 7900 GS standard is 3% faster than Radeon X1950 GT, this last being 20% faster than Radeon X1650 XT. Doom 3 - v1.3 - AA 4x We return under Doom 3 where we activate this time anti-aliasing 4x . If GeForce 7900 GTX remains at the head, it was joined by Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB ! Both GeForce 7900 GS respectively occupy the third and fourth places whereas Radeon X1950 GT is not able to catch them. Here GeForce 7900 GS standard is 22% faster  than Radeon X1950 GT. The Radeon X1950 Pro show higher performance than the GT version by about  13%. Call Of Duty 2 - v1.3 - AA 4x & AF As was already see in the call of duty 2 test (without AA an AF), Radeon X1950 XT dominates largely  It precedes GeForce 7900 GTX whereas Radeon X1950 Pro and X1950 GT finish third and fourth respectively. X1950 Pro is here 12% faster than X1950 GT and if we compares the performances of the last card from ATI with Radeon X1650 XT a profit of 49% is observed! Company Of Heroes - v1.4 - AA We continues with Company of Heroes. Here Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB takes the lead in front of GeForce 7900 GTX whereas Radeon X1950 Pro finishes in third position confirming the ease of ATI card under this game. Radeon X1950 GT is found in the fourth position, in front of our two GeForce 7900 GS. Vs GeForce 7900 standard GS Radeon X1950 GT show 34% more performance. Compared with Radeon X1650 XT, Radeon X1950 GT is 47% faster in 1920x1200. F.E.A.R. v1.08 - AA 4x - AF16x Return under F.E.A.R. by activating this time the functions of anti-aliasing and soft shader. the Result, that Radeon X1900 XT became the leader here and Radeon X1950 Pro finishes in third position. Our Radeon X1950 GT seems here to suffer from a bug on its performance level , the card show a lower  score lower than Radeon X1650 XT. Let us guarantee that ATI will correct soon this problem. Call Of Duty 2 - v1.3 - AA 4x - AF The activation of anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering under Call Of Duty 2 gives Radeon X1900 large XT victory and thus confirm the good services of ATI when it is a question of combining performances and image quality . On its side Radeon X1950 GT does just better than GeForce 7900 GS in 1920x1200. And even the overclocking from TwinTech does not allow  NVIDIA the equalize X1950 GT. It is noted that this last is 49% faster than Radeon X1650 XT Tomb Raider Legends - Next Gen - v1.2 - AA For Lara Croft, Radeon X1900 XT is essential . The last card from ATI finishes between GeForce 7900 standard GS and its overclocked version from TwinTech. In general we note that GeForce 7900 GS has about the same performance as Radeon X1950 GT . Vs GeForce 7600 GT, Radeon X1950 GT is faster by 52% in 1600x1200 and 57% faster in 1920x1200. Half-Life 2 Lost Coast - AA4x - AF16x One finishes with Half-Life 2 Lost Coast which we test here with antialiasing and anisotropic filtering. This time GeForce 7900 GTX is at the head but with a short advance over Radeon X1900 XT. in this test Radeon X1950 Pro confirms a profit in performances by 14% over Radeon X1650 XT whereas GeForce 7900 GS is slightly faster  except in 1920x1200 T. Overclocking: !!! We should note that overclocking Radeon X1950 GT is full disappointment , since the BIOS proposed by Sapphire gives access to the OverDrive functions by driver ATI Catalyst, the smalled increase in frequency, result to insupportable screen flickering  . Side 7900gs the card come Already overclocked :-) , GeForce 7900 GS from TwinTech show better result with overclocking. Without too many efforts, we could push it close to the 600 MHz with 596 MHz for the graphics chip and 810 MHz for the memory we should quite nicely boost the performance of this last. TwinTech GeForce 7900 GS  show a certain overclocking  potential ! Conclusion NVIDIA already released the DirectX 10 card since the release of its GeForce 8800, ATI shows an obvious technological delay and until the moment the R600 still in development stage .  Radeon X1950 GT is not revolution from a technological side , after all it is only the Radeon X1950 Pro with lower clock frequenct , its price is particularly very promising! With 150 euros, GeForce 7900 GS from TwinTech has  good performances, it does not offer antialiasing with  HDR , the also don\'t have HDCP .
