In our recent review we introduced two new intel processors , Core 2 Duo e6420 and E6320, which will appear in sale in the second-half of April. Today we will continue to review the new intel cpu . As we already noted many time these CPU are based on core conroe. On the list of new cpu we also has the e4400. Significant special features in this model are two. First, allendale core (already familiar to us on Core 2 Duo e4300 and being differed from other cpu in terms of reduced to 2 Mbytes cache in the second level), second, low cost. This processor, after its appearance in official intel Price- list, will obtain the extremely attractive price : $133.
Some time ago we introduced also another processor from this family, the processor core 2 Duo e4300. This processor became first CPU, in which where found the core allendale, which physically contains only 2 mega-byte L2 cache. Specifically, reduction in core area allowed Intel to decrease the prime cost of the production of such CPU and to set on them a completely attractive prices.
The will become the second low-end processor built on micro-architecture core. Like Core 2 Duo e4300, Core 2 Duo e4400 will be characterized not only by the reduced to 2 Mbytes second level cache , but also by the use of 800-mhz system bus. However, the clock frequency of this new processor will exceed the frequency Of core 2 Duo e4300 on 200 MHz and will be equal to 2.0 GHz.
Core 2 Duo e4400 detailed specifications are in the following table:

As u see, Core 2 Duo e4400 differ from processors family e6000 in terms of stepping core, L2. According to the existing experience, this stepping has worse overclocking possibility, than stepping B2. In the number of other differences we should note the absence in Core 2 Duo e4400 of support to technology intel virtualization technology. However, this technology in practice is not used in desktop computers from usual users; therefore its absence is hardly considered as a large loss.
CPU- Z utility confirmed the L2 stepping used in core 2 Duo e4400 .
The deference between stepping B2 and L2 is clear from the processor .
IN the left side – conroe, stepping B2; in the right side – allendale, stepping L2.
Clock frequency vs FSB frequency and L2 cache volume
As we already noted, the most attractive characteristics of processor core 2 Duo e4400 is its price. Those processors, with 2.0 GHz clock frequency in intel Price- list are located below all processors core 2 Duo e6000. In other words, this product is cheaper than Core 2 Duo e6320 ( processor with lower clock frequency, which is 1.86 GHz ) . And it is not simply cheaper, but it is cheaper by more than 20%, witch can be described as completely serious difference. It is obvious, intel calculated that frequency FSB, equal to 800 MHz, and L2 cache with 2 Mbytes volume will make Core 2 Duo e4400 slower proposal, than Core 2 Duo e6320.
However, this causes some doubts. SO , we decided to compare the speed Of core 2 Duo e4400 and Core 2 Duo e6320 in many applications.
We used the following system in our test:
Motherboard: ASUS P5N- E SLI (LGA775, NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI);
Memory: 2048MB DDR 2-800 SDRAM (Mushkin XP 2-6400PRO, 2 x 1024 MB, DDR 2-800, 4- 4- 4-12);
Graphic card: PowerColor x1900 XTX 512MB;
Disk : Western digital WD1500AHFD.
Operating system: Microsoft Windows vista ultimate (64-bit).
Here is the results obtained in tests .

Core 2 Duo e4400 vs Core 2 Duo e6320 Processor performance
Core 2 Duo e4400 vs Core 2 Duo e6320 gaming performance
Core 2 Duo e4400 vs Core 2 Duo e6320 office performance
Core 2 Duo e4400 vs Core 2 Duo e6320 Video/audio performance
Core 2 Duo e4400 vs Core 2 Duo e6320 rendering performance
Core 2 Duo e4400 vs Core 2 Duo e6320 daily use performance
Core 2 Duo e6320 do not have large advantage over cheaper processor core 2 Duo e4400. Their is a large quantity of tasks, for which first priority belong to the computational power of processor, which directly depends on the clock frequency. To the number of such applications include : images processing , sound and video, and also final rendering. In other words, Core 2 Duo e6320 shows higher performance, than Core 2 Duo e4400, only in office applications and 3d games.
Thus, with the selection of cheap dual core processor of family core 2 Duo users will have acceptable office and multimedia application. However, taking in account that Core 2 Duo e4400 is cheaper than Core 2 Duo e6320 by $30, selection easily can be inclined in favor of e4400.
Core 2 duo e4400 Overclocking
But most interesting in Core 2 Duo e4400 are undoubtedly its overclocking potential. From one side this processor is attractively inexpensive and due to the use of 800 MHZ frontal system bus, and with relatively high multiplier 10x, which makes this cpu great overclocker. However, from other side this CPU is made on core allendale, which in overclock rarely can compete with valuable conroe (B2). In particular, if we check large overclocking stats, it is possible to conclude that the most applicable overclock for Core 2 Duo e4300 on the same core ( stepping L2 ) (with air cooling) is the frequencies 3.2-3.3 GHz. Therefore from the hero of today\'s review, Core 2 Duo e4400, we did not expect a separately impressive successes.
For tests we assembled a special system, which consists on motherboard ASUS P5B deluxe, module memory corsair dominator TWIN2X2048-8888C4DF, which operated at a frequency of synchronous FSB, and video card powerColor x1900 XTX 512MB. For heat removal we used the cooler zalman CMPS9700 LED. The operational stability of system in the overclocked state was checked with the aid of the well recommended utility SP2004/ORTHOS.
With default cpu voltage supply (Vcore) , which was set for our processor to 1.2875 , this CPU could reach only the frequency of 2.93 GHz. I.e., taking in account the 10x multiplier, we where at 293 MHz FSB frequency . An increase in Vcore to 1.6 v allowed to raise FSB frequency for a stable work @ 325 MHz.
As result, the processor was overclocked to 3.25 GHz frequency , which appears too low in we compare it with overclock result of family core 2 Duo e6000. However, this is completely normal for processor on core allendale. From one side this CPU give the possibility to save, but in the other side, its overclocking potential is inferior to core 2 Duo e6000 series.
However, operating at frequency 3.25 GHz, Core 2 Duo e4400 will have very good performance . This frequency exceeds the default clock frequency of processors core 2 Extreme from the upper price category. So after overclocking the Core 2 Duo e4400 , it is possible to reach higher performance level than the most expensive systems, which work in the default mode :-).
