Celeron 4XX ( Conroe-l ) Overview:
The processors celeron, built on micro-architecture core will be announced during June. The family of updated celeron processors will include on the first times three models, 440, 430 and 420. Prices of these CPU will be pretty low : they will be in the range from $40 to $60.
The processors celeron 4XX will be based on core conroe, which in this case is known under the code name Conroe- L. Basic special features of Conroe- L are : single core structure, the reduced to 512 kbyte cache in the second level and 800-mhz system bus . The clock frequencies of first processors celeron 4XX will modest, from 1.6 to 2.0 GHz.
The first engineering model processor celeron 4XX on core Conroe- L are available on the market, but their multiplier is not locked. Differences between this processor , the dual core conroe and Allendale proved to be noticeable.
We had some difficulties in the installation of processor in our test system, based on motherboard ASUS P5B premium with BIOS version 402 . This BIOS version proved to be completely somehow compatible with Conroe- L, after the Bios POST , the motherboard displayed this message : “Intel CPU uCode loading error. Press F1 to Resume”. However, system successfully loaded after F1 key pressure.
In contrast to BIOS, the diagnostic utility CPU- Z version 1.39 , displayed a completely correct information about our processor copy .
This Utility successfully recognized the processor celeron with code name Conroe- L. As it is evident from the screen shot, our copy allow to set the multiplier up to 12x. Taking in account the 800-mhz system bus frequency , we have the possibility to set the cpu frequencies up to 2.4 GHz. Obviously, there certain clock reserve to the future, since the maximum Conroe- L frequency will reach only 2.0 GHz.
Processor support 64- bit expansions EM64T, which now is in all contemporary CPU. However, in this case a part of functionality in Celeron was reduced. Budget processors will be deprived from the support to technology virtualization and enhanced intel speedStep.
Thus, comparing the characteristics of contemporary Celeron with micro-architecture netBurst and Celeron on core Conroe- L, it is possible to obtain the following picture:

Celeron 4XX ( Conroe-l ) Performance
In order to affirm the advantage Of celeron series 4XX over 3XX processors , we decided to compare the speed of celeron D with architecture netBurst with the performance of the promising processor celeron 440, Fastest Conroe- L single core representative .
Processors:
Celeron D 365 (LGA775, 3.6GHz, 533MHz FSB, 512KB L2, Cedar mill);
Motherboard: ASUS P5B premium (LGA775, Intel p965);
Memory: 2048MB DDR 2-800 SDRAM (Mushkin XP 2-6400PRO, 2 x 1024 MB, DDR 2-800, 4- 4- 4-12);
Graphic Card: PowerColor x1900 XTX 512MB;
Disk subsystem: Western digital WD1500AHFD;
Operating system: Microsoft Windows vista ultimate (64-bit).
The results obtained in tests are given in the following table.

The obtained results prove, that the transfer of processors family celeron in the micro-architecture core allow them to be noticeably . Practically in all benchmarks celeron 440 exceeded Celeron D 365, moreover approximately in half of cases the value of this advantage exceeds 20- percent . The higher performance of budget single cores processors with the architecture core is especially clear in office applications, games and image processing tasks .
We should note that besides the higher performance of the promising Celeron (Conroe-L) , This last has smaller heat emission and energy consumption. The typical heat emission value for processors with core Conroe- L will be set in 35 W, while CPU from family celeron D with 65 nm core cedar mill have TDP, equal to 65 W.
Celeron 4XX ( Conroe-l ) Overclocking
It is necessary to note that from the purely theoretical positions , celeron built on core Conroe- L, appears to be very good overclocker . . First, dual core processors with core conroe reach higher overclock frequencies if user swith off one core. Conroe- L come already with one core . In the second place, this processor possesses completely low TDP, which also can be received as the high frequency potential. Third, estimations relative to the number of transistors in Conroe- L allow us to conclude that this a comparatively simple core. While the dual core conroe has 291 mln. transistors, core Conroe- L has only a little more than 100 mln. transistors. The degree of semiconductor crystal simplicity is frequently directly connected with its overclocking possibilities. However, from theory it is necessary to pass to in practice. For our overclock experiments with processor Conroe- L was used the same system noted above. As cooling we used zalman CNPS-9500LED (air cooler). The system operational stability in the overclocked state was checked with the aid of the well recommended utility SP2004/ORTHOS.
It is necessary to note that Due to the 200 MHz FSB frequency , the processors with Conroe- L must be overclocked comparatively simply in that sense : there is no need for high FSB frequency to get high overclock .
With increase in the core voltage to 1.6 v we succeeded in increasing the FSB frequency of our Conroe- L only to 300 MHz.
In other words, the overclock of this so promising processor was stopped at 3.0 GHz frequency . With additional checking , we come to the conclusion that this the processor limit , connected either with effect FSB wall or with some motherboard incompatibility issue.
As conclusion of Conroe- L overclock it is worthwhile to talk about its performance. we compared the speed of the overclocked to 3.0 GHz Conroe- L with processors pentium D 925 and Core 2 Duo e4300.

The overclocked Conroe- L loses over the dual core processor core 2 Duo e4300, showing higher speed only in those tasks, which are optimized under multithreading and in this case are not so demanding in the L2 cache volume . Then Conroe- L overclock give it the possibility to come out on level of Pentium D 925. Approximately in half benchmarks this dual core CPU with micro-architecture netBurst shows lower speed than our single core hero.
Conclusions
Conroe- L will be Released during June . The low clock frequency do not limit the new celeron capability , since this new micro-architecture significantly differ the preceding netBurst in many value. Thus, the release of celeron processors with core Conroe- L will result in a noticeable performance increase in budget CPU with simultaneous reduction in their heat emission and energy consumption. In addition the new celeron processors will be sold on the completely attractive prices. The processor celeron 420 with frequency 1.6 GHz will cost $40, and elder model with micro-architecture core, Celeron 440 with frequency 2.0 GHz, will cost approximately $60.
