Intel recently released core 2 Duo e6320 and E6420 witch already appeared in stores several days ago, Intel Pentium e2140 and E2160, which announcement is expected soon, are already available in store ...
U can check our previous review about those processors , we decided to make an additional to check again their overclocking potential :-)
Thus, processors Intel Pentium e2140 operate at 1.6 GHz frequency , the default system bus frequency is equal to 800 (200) MHz, i.e., its default multiplier is 8x, it is equipped with 1 MB cache volume and assembled in Malaysia , SLA3J.
Picture is clear. We have here L2 core with 1mb cache only in the second level. We note that entire entire instructions and technologies collection remained in new processors .
The presence of energy-economy technologies is confirmed by the utility right-Mark CPU clock utility : in idle time the voltage and frequency are lowered . This Program wrongly defines the core as Merom and indicates an understated temperature. CPU- Z Utility also also wrongly shows the current vcore.
Here is the system used to overclock this processor :
Hard disk – maxtor diamondMax 10 6L200M0, SATA 200 GB;
Cooling system – zalman CNPS9700 LED;
Power unit – sunbeamtech nuuo SUNNU550-EUAP (550W).
As its already know new Intel processors has one unpleasant for overclocker special feature witch is FSB wall. This is the FSB frequency , above which user cannot rise the FSB . Theoretically the system is capable to work at higher frequencies, but in this case the concrete processor copy limits us.
For the first copy the multiplier was reduced from 8x to 6x , we attempted to start at 400 MHz FSB frequency , then 390 MHz, then 385 MHz… But here , the system did not even started, but to start and load Windows was possible only at 380 MHz frequency .
The system did not start with a increase in multiplier to the default 8x at 380 MHz frequency , it worked at 375 MHz frequency , but it has not passed tests even higher voltage , but at FSB of MHz its successfully past 30- minute checking by utility OCCT. There was no need to increase the processor voltage , this last worked on its default 1.325 v and under load the maximum temperature was 55c.
In any case motherboard BIOS update from version 0902 to 1001, did not change the obtained results .
The series number of the second processor was close to the first copy, but they where noticeably different each from other. Initial checking with the multiplier reduced to 6x showed that the processor was capable to start at the FSB frequency 400 MHz . We note that default voltage of this processor is 1.1875 v only !!!!
This last was capable to pass simple tests as superPi At 350 MHz FSB (overclocked to 2.8 GHz ) using default voltage. . But from full stability it was necessary to reduce this frequency to 340 MHz.
So for stability checking , we recommend to try the updated utility prime95 version 25.2. the new version support multicore processors.
Back to our overclock test , the second processor passed checking in OCCT during 30 minutes and in Prime95 during 50 minutes at 390 MHz frequency with voltage 1.375 v. maximum temperature according to coreTemp composed 61c during OCCT tests and 65c with Prime95.
The third processor was practically similar to the second. The overclock limit at 6x also was located in 400 MHz FSB, and with x8 multiplier we have reached 390 MHz frequency with the same voltage 1.375 v . with the default voltage the third processor passed tests at 380 MHz FSB frequency .
But here our last fourth processor proved to be nearer to the first on its overclocking capability . With 6x multiplier windows could start only with 380 FSB, then with the default 8x it operated at 375 MHz frequency without increase in the regular voltage 1.325 v.
From one side, the absolute overclock numbers are not so great, but from the other side those value composes an impressing 95% over the default rating. The only limits is the FSB wall, and also the low processor multiplier (8x). It is necessary to note that processors Intel Pentium e2140 are not very well suitable for overclock. From a theoretical point of view Intel Pentium e2160 appear more promising , it has 9x multiplier , and its price is only $10 higher. We will check the overclock of those processor next time.
The maximum frequency of contemporary processors core 2 Duo is 2.66 GHz, and in Core 2 Extreme this value grows to 2.93 GHz. Even the weakest tested today processors exceeded these frequency. It is clear that the low cache volume (1 MB) will not boost the performance, but this should result in impressing performance for low price processor (approximately $75 )...
