Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 and Core 2 Duo E6850 review benchmark and overclocking

Intel company is the unquestionable leader on performance in top end desktop segment of x86- processors . For the moment intel present the only four core processor (in one socket) , But this last do not plan to stop here and continues to propose faster processor with lower price , Based on the principle best ratio speed / money . Today we will examine the sequential champion: Intel core 2 eXtreme QX6850, which is faster align=justifythan the last high end chip from Intel . This new quad core processor offer the increased core frequency , furthermore, a higher system bus frequency ( passing from 1066 Mhz to 1333 MHz (Quad Bumped) ).

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850: New FSB1333 , Quad-Core processor

Core 2 Extreme QX6850 still as previous based on Kentsfield core , It has four core united in one chip working each one at 3 GHZ frequency .

This processor support higher system bus than previous , we have here the 1333 MHZ system bus instead of the old 1066 , Let us note that system bus play big role for intel processor , witch are generally limited by their bus frequency, AMD for a while already solved this problem with hyperTransport system and the integrated memory controller . Intel Also plan to release similar system Now called : INTEL QUICKPATH SYSTEM BUS in 2008 . Now the theoretical memory bandwidth is increased from the old 8,5 GB/S using the 1066mhz system bus (Quad bumped = 266 x 4) to 10,6 GB/S using 1333 mhz system bus (Quad bumped = 333 x 4) .This remain low to max out current DDR2 800 MHz witch theoretical bandwidth in over 12GB/s but this should improve the memory performance theorically by just over 20%.

As all other Kentsfield processor this processor is made by two dual core (Core 2 Duo processor) working at 3 GHz and having each one 4MB in the second level (shared between them) .Core 2 Extreme QX6850 is announced with TDP equal to 130 Watts . witch is pretty good considering the current working frequency , technical process and the core number. thus our processor work with 1.25 default voltage using 9x multiplier and 333 MHz (9*333 MHz= 2997 or 3000 MHz ).As all core Duo or Quad processor this processor is made on 65 Nm process and support EM64T (for 64 bits instructions ), INTEL VT for virtualization or instructions SSSE3 ( SSE3 Supplemental ).

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850

INTEL Core 2 Extreme E6850: New FSB1333 , Dual-Core processor

Core 2 Extreme E6850 still as previous based on Core 2 Duo core , It has 2 core united in one chip working each one working at 3 GHZ frequency . In a word It is one half of Core 2 Extreme QX6850 .

Just as Core 2 Extreme Qx6850 , this processor support higher system bus than previous (As all new intel core 2 duo processor) , we deal here 1333 MHZ quad bumped system bus instead 1066 MHZ , Again like Core 2 Extreme Qx6850 , Core 2 Extreme E6850 should also benefit from the higher system bus especially in memory intensive application since the theoretical bandwidth was increased from 8.5Gb/s to 10.6GB/s.

Core 2 Extreme E6850 is working at 3 GHz (2 core each work at 3 GHZ) and have 4MB in the second level shared L2 cache , So each of two core can access to the hole L2 memory available according to application need .

If Core 2 Extreme QX6850 is announced with TDP equal to 130 Watts then Core 2 Extreme E6850 is its half so it was announced for 65 Watts . Similar to the previous processor , this one is made on 65 Nm process and support EM64T (for 64 bits instructions ), INTEL VT for virtualization or instructions SSSE3 ( SSE3 Supplemental ).

3D simulation

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : 3d rendering

If we check the detailed tests results , it becomes evident that in all operations, except rendering, four core did not help a lot. However, due to the huge speed advantage in rendering (this process, as is known, it is executed in parallel practically ideally) the general result of four core processor is considerably higher.

Math Lab ,Engeneer,solid Work

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : professional application

The advantage of QX6850 is attained not due to two additional cores (otherwise QX6700 would win over X6800), but due to the increased frequency , in addition due to the faster system bus .

Working with digital photo

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : photoshop

The most known operations and filters in Adobe photo shop are sufficiently well supported by dual and four cores processor. Here the advantage from four core processor is clear.

Compilation

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : compile

Despite to the declared support of multi core, the compiler MS visual studio 2005 could not operate with four core: The advantage of QX6850 above X6800 is completely due to the difference in frequency. Core 2 Duo extreme E6850 is as fast here as Core 2 Duo extreme QX6850 , more core do not show any boost in this test.

Web server

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : webserver

We noted earlier that the test Apache benchmark introduces to Intel four core processor some strange result : four core at 3GHZ frequency lose over dual cores analog at the frequency .

Synthetics

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : synthetics

CPU right Mark in the rendering module is capable to operate with 32 processors; therefore there is nothing surprising in such result, four core processor are just faster in this test.

Data Packing

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : winrar

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : 7zip

Winrar show some boost from four processor wile 7-zip still more limited to dual core , In a world four core don't have much benefit from today archiving utility.

Fine Reader : Optical recognition

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : fine reader

QX6850 exceeded the nearest competitor due to the increased frequency, the doubled quantity of core did not give any advantage.

Audio data Coding

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : audio encoding

Most test don't react to four core , dual core are as fast as their quad core analog .Here The clock frequency play the big role.

video data Coding

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : video encoding

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : Divx encoding

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : pro coder

The majorities of video codec, utilized by us in this tests, completely support two and four cores; therefore the advantage of four core in this test do not come as a surprise.

Games

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : call of dutty

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : half life 2

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : quad 4

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : serious sam

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : supreme commnader

Purely nominal advantage of QX6850 above X6800 or E6850 : first, four core processor in games did not give any special advantages ,Dual core processor with faster frequency show better result.

General marks

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : professional score

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : home score

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : overall score

Overall result show that even four core at 2,66 GHz frequency are as fast as two cores at 2,93 GHz frequency (Core 2 eXtreme QX6700 vs X6800). QX6850 was detached from the old nearest competitors X6800 by 12% on average due to three advantages: first, it has four core (in contrast to X6800 witch have only two), second, high frequency , and third, the faster system bus. If we talk about QX6850 vs E6850 than the difference is about 10-7% : here advantage come in optimized under multi core application , such as video encoding , rendering ..

Energy consumption

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : power consumption idle

INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX6850 vs Core 2 Extreme E6850 : power consumption load

The difference in energy consumption in idle state time between QX6700 and QX6850 can not be explained exclusively by increase in the system bus frequency and additional core number. We assume that this is BIOS related , and some functions of energy consumption reduction were not included . There is no reason to blame motherboard producer since at the moment ,those processor still pretty new and bug fix will be removed with time . As for energy consumption at 100% load , here all is clear

Conclusion

Actually, in our view Core 2 eXtreme QX6850 was not necessary for Intel in order to prove its superiority : But the release of similar processor is always in the benefit of user since the price of previous processor drop down , and why not to buy them since intel propose Core 2 Duo E6850 at price lower than 300$ .
