OLPC now counts on the size of plane-table computers and devices for reading electronic books collecting popularity, whose brightest commercial successful representatives are Apple iPad and Amazon kindle. At least, the statement of OLPC representatives projects published yesterday confirmed such thoughts. The presented during March ARM- platform Marvell moby was selected by OLPC founders as a strategic direction in the development of student computers - now already in the plane-table form factor, but with constant price not more than $100.
Let us recall that the standard platform moby is a plane-table computer with 10 inches screen on base of marvell ARMADA 610 processor with ARM- architecture. It is capable to reproduce and to write HD video with 1080p and to work with adobe flash. As the operating system it is possible to use Windows mobile, Google android and Linux ubuntu. Connection with the external device is ensured on bluetooth and Wi-Fi interfaces, FM and GPS receivers are provided. Special application will allow students to obtain access more than to two million free books in the electronic size. The energy consumption level of the plane-table device will not exceed 1 W, whereas existing student netbook XO consumes near 5 W. The first models of plane-table computers, according to their characteristics of Moby close to the standard platform, will be shown on CES 2011 during January next year, only later will appear series student plane-tables, which cost not more than $100.
In 2012 OLPC promises to present the plane-table computer, which resembles according to its characteristics the concept XO- E, in the last photograph. Of course it will be also built on Marvell platform. Will appear the intermediate model XO-1.75, which will replace AMD processor by Marvell processor in the traditional netbook form factor.
