Company AMD recently promised that in proportion to the near announcement of four core processors barcelona it will inform the all community by new characteristics of these long-awaited processor. . Today we will talk about the sufficiently important characteristic of any processor : the core area . Impression can be formed, that the area core disturbs only the amateurs of overclock, who attempt to calculate heat-flux density with the appearance of more compact cores. Meanwhile area core is important for the producer from economic side: as rule, the less the area cores, the lower prime cost for the production of processor, and the greater processors is possible to make from the standard silicic plate. This characteristic is especially important for AMD with processors generation K8L (K10) witch have monolithic crystal. Furthermore, AMD has the limited production capacities; therefore the ability to release many processors is critical for the compagny . it became known that the processors barcelona will have the core area  283 sq. mm, and the number of transistors will reach 463 mln. . If we compare: the existing 90 nm dual core processors windsor with 2 X 1 mb.cache in the second level witch have a crystal area 220 sq. mm, the number of transistors reaches 227,4 mln as a defernce between processor. So the twice large increase in the quantity of core and appearance of cache in the third level is pretty complicated to expect  savings on core space, even taking in account the passage to the thinner technical process. But here the core area was not increased a lot . If we compare Barcelona and Manchester, which have identical cache volume in the second level : 512 KB by core, then we will obtain the following numbers. Manchester has a core area 183 sq. mm, and Barcelona - 283 sq. mm, i.e., core area  increased only one-and-half times, whereas the number of core in this case was doubled. Thus AMD processors with four core are able to retain the unique parity of areas with intel processors . In particular, the area of dual core crystal conroe is 143 sq. mm, after the association of two such crystals in one four core processor kentsfield we obtain 286 sq. mm, which is very close to the area core Of barcelona. 283 sq. mm : is too much for the mass price segment. For this reason four core  AMD processors cannot get  popularity, if area core will not be reduced only to the level 200 sq. mm. then we will hardly see acceble price for those processor, Japanese associates assert that to preserve this tendency will help the 45 nm core shanghai, which will be released in 2008. Let us note that the processors shanghai will obtain 6 mb cache in the third level, and in this case they can decrease crystal area to value on the order of 200 sq. mm. the positive role  here will play the passage on 45 nm technical process.
