Optical tweezers - a device, used by physicists to manipulate microparticles. Its action is based on the principle that all around the light beam emitted from the laser diode is formed by an electromagnetic field, which attracts microscopic objects. A team of researchers from the School of Engineering at Stanford, under the guidance of Professor Jennifer Dion have developed a method that allows to use optical tweezers to work with the particle size of less than two nanometers.
Previously this was not possible because the oscillation of the beam of the visible light is about 400 nanometers. Professor Dion compares the process of capturing such a beam with catching minnows .
Scientists have come to the aid of the so-called plasmon polaritons - particles formed by the interaction of photons and free electrons at the surface of metals, easily conductive, such as gold or silver. Beam, made of polaritons allows precise operation with simple proteins or other small particles.
The importance of this invention is that the described tool provides tremendous opportunities for the development of new materials at the atomic level and will build microscopic devices and accessories. A working prototype will be assembled in the laboratory at Stanford in early 2013.
