The U.S. Patent Office, USPTO rejected the requirement to register the phrase Apple iPad mini as a single brand. USPTO experts argue that the word mini is generally applicable to the description of items that have reduced dimensions.
Moreover, the name iPad in USPTO is not considered sufficiently unique. The prefix "i", according to the authors, is often used to refer to devices that are able to access the Internet. The word pad in the technical field is commonly used to refer to elements of the tablet and touch interfaces. Accordingly, the name iPad is not so unique, to protect it as a trade mark.
