The standardization committee JEDEC Solid State Technology Association has announced the publication of standard JESD84-B50 - Embedded MultiMediaCard, Electrical Standard 5.0. This introduces a new standard in effect for SoC and controllers with built-in flash memory - eMMC v5.0. The previous version of the standard - eMMC v4.5 - provide access to the flash system smartphones and tablets at a rate of 200 Mb / s. The new version of the standard will raise the data rate to 400 MB / s. To be fair, we recall that the built-in flash memory is used not only in consumer devices.
What's interesting, just ten days ago JEDEC Committee published the final edition of a different standard interfaces for embedded flash memory - UFS (Universal Flash Storage). Data speed serial bus UFS you can transfer the data to the built-in flash memory array with a flow of 600 Mb / s to 1.2 Gb / s in each direction. But the standard UFS has not found supportersamong SoC developers . Just like sitting on the eMMC, and continue to sit on this standard. The same new platform Intel Bay Trail, for example, access the flash memory interface uses eMMC.
In addition to increasing the exchange rate on the data bus eMMC new version introduces a number of interesting features. JEDEC committee are three of them: a firmware update in the operating device, which is particularly important for industrial electronics; function of collecting statistics on the term of the life cycle of the flash module - Device Health Report; function and safe care to sleep - Sleep Notification.
