On Wednesday, Toshiba posted on its official website a memorandum, which reported on further cooperation with SanDisk.
It is in this new factory complex to begin production of Toshiba 3D NAND-memory
Proceed to the demolition of the old building promise later this month and end - the end of August. In September, to begin construction of a new, and construction completion is scheduled for summer 2015. But even then it will be too early to rejoice: the end of 2015 will continue finishing work, and actually self production equipment will be supplied only at the beginning of 2016. And only by the summer of the same year it supposedly should work .
But what's the point with the demolition of the building? Formally - in an effort to conform to the latest fashion trends on sustainability: the new building will be equipped in accordance with the latest engineering solutions, in particular, will be used exclusively by LED lighting, will be widely used waste heat. As a result, the assurance of the designers will be achieved energy savings and CO2 emissions will be 15% less in comparison with the most new and best Fab5, located nearby.
The real meaning is likely more prosaic and actually pursued a much more modest goals than ecology. First, remember about the problems with nuclear power in Japan - because of this electricity price decline is clearly not, rather the contrary. A similar production is quite energy intensive and even a few percent savings will be expressed in significant amounts of money.
Secondly apparently, Toshiba and SanDisk have problems with engineering developments in the field of three-dimensional flash memory. But it is worth remembering that Samsung still nine months ago, presented to the public ready SSD on 3D V-NAND.
