Hewlett-Packard reported about a new project, where it will create a new computer architecture called Machine. The initiative is aimed primarily at the server hardware, but HP also promises to release a version Machine, designed for Android-powered devices. Underlying Machine will be used based on the memristor memory and silicon photonics. Although HP project launched about two years ago, and work on Machine employs three quarters of staff research unit, to overcome all the technical difficulties it may take at least another three years. . The main goal is to replace the Machine various types of universal memory array consisting of the memristor. As explained by HP, modern computing devices (from smart phones to supercomputers) constantly move data between three layers of memory: first (SRAM), then (DRAM) and finally (HDD, SSD storage Devices). Memristor will be fast enough and cheap to replace the last two layers, and therefore eliminate most of the data movement . In this memory device based on the memristor will have an impressive density - HP promises 100 terabytes of storage in smartphones.
