Modern cellular networks are not suited for video streaming. This is manifested, in particular, in the form of large delay, which may exceed 15 seconds compared to cable or Internet TV. Samsung company , together with South Korea's largest mobile operator SK Telecom demonstrated a technology called MPEG Media Transport, which can significantly improve the efficiency of video transmission over cellular networks.
Technology MPEG Media Transport should address existing weaknesses and widely used at the present time MPEG-2 TS, describing audiovisual data packetization and multiplexing them into a single stream. Samsung and SKT are able to reduce delay time to 80% or up to 3 seconds when transmitting video by LTE-compound.
The companies plan to begin commercial use of MPEG Media Transport in the next year. Interestingly, Samsung and SKT are going to make the technology a global standard, which attracted industry associations like the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).
