Since last year, we knew that the processors Intel Skylake integrated voltage regulator (FIVR) will be gone. This innovation is the company introduced Haswell processors generation . Skylake again use external voltage regulator, and the processor runs more than one power channel . In the autumn session IDF 2015 Intel representatives explained why Skylake generation processors had to part with built-in voltage regulator.
Built-in voltage regulator shown itself extremely efficient (up to 90% efficiency), only at high (full) loads. For currents less than 6 amperes conversion efficiency is greatly reduced, and the more, the more phases were involved. Thus, when the load current of 2 A and 16 working phases converter efficiency embedded controller was 70%. To top processor for games and other heavy loads - it is not critical, but for processors class tablets and thin notebooks this is unacceptable.
The stumbling block for the effectiveness FIVR become technically impossible to create on-chip inductor with high inductance. Since the inductance of the coil CMOS-small, Intel had to increase the frequency of phase converters a hundred times - up to 140 MHz. This has increased the speed of transition from one state to another, but cut the efficiency at light loads.
